Matilee Dunn McGee, of Atlanta, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2013. She was born in Warm Springs on September 16, 1911, and was preceded in death by her husband, Hassell Elmore McGee.
Mrs. McGee received her Bachelor of Science degree from LaGrange College, in LaGrange. She then received her master's degree, Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of Georgia, where she was also a member of Phi Kappa Phi. She taught zoology at the University of Georgia during World War II and continued her career teaching in the Atlanta Public School System until her retirement. For many years, she continued to be involved in numerous activities and served on the Board of Directors of Columbus Bank & Trust. Mrs. McGee was a member of the Haygood Memorial United Methodist Church, in Atlanta.
She is survived by her daughters, Lee Herrin, and her husband, Van, of Athens, and Lynn Whetstine, and her husband, Don, of Summerville, S.C.; grandchildren, Andrew Herrin, and his wife, Clara, of Athens, Courtney Cooley, and her husband, Andy, of Suwanee, Amanda McPherson, and her husband, Kevin, of Columbus, Melanie Whetstine-Richel, and her husband, Tim, of Palouse, Wash., Amy Wilhite, and her husband, Steve, of Memphis, Tenn., and Jennifer Whetstine, of Goose Creek, S.C.; and ten great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12, at Bernstein.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 13, at Crest Lawn Cemetery, in Atlanta. Dr. Jim Higgins will officiate.
