Mr. S.A. Long, age 91, of 2992 Old Maysville Road, Commerce, passed away on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at Northridge Medical Center, in Commerce.
Mr. Long was born on June 11, 1921, son of the late Samuel H. and Ellen Branyon Long. He was the last surviving member of his family, having been preceded in death by four brothers and seven sisters.
Mr. Long was married to the late Sarah Tiller Long for 61 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942-1945, was involved in the Battle of the Bulge with the 83rd Infantry Division, and performed duties in Canada, England, Scotland, Wales, France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, and Czechoslovakia. He later retired from Roper Pump Company.
Mr. Long was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church and loved Georgia football--he watched all of the games.
He is survived by his niece and nephew, Irene and Buddy Sexton, who were also his caregivers, as well as several other nieces and nephews, along with a host of friends. He was a wonderful uncle and was loved so much.
The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 9, at Pruitt Funeral Home. Funeral services for Mr. Long will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home chapel, with the Rev. Glenn Lyles officiating. Burial will take place in the Ila City Cemetery.
