Mr. Fowell Hill "Dick" Mendenhall, Jr., age 79, of Athens died Tuesday, December 31, 2013, at his home following an extended illness.
A memorial service and visitation will be held Thursday, January 2, 2014, in the Bridges Funeral Home Chapel at 2:00 p.m with Rev. Bill Hayes officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the memorial service in the Bridges Funeral Home Chapel, Thursday, January 2. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 3, 2014 at Gaissert Methodist Church in Sparta, GA with Rev. Jan McCoy officiating, with interment in Sparta Cemetery. The family will receive friends in Gaissert United Methodist Church from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m., Friday, January 3.
Mr. Mendenhall was born in Burlington, NC, a Veteran of the US Army, member of Gaissert Methodist Church, and had a distinguished career in radio and television broadcasting that began as a Sports and Production Director at WGAU Radio in Athens, GA. He was retired as a Public Relations Manager, for Bell Telephone Company of Philadelphia, PA, member of the 1996 Athens Olympic Committee, and member of Athens Chamber of Commerce. His work experience included TV Editorialist with WSB Atlanta and WFIL Philadelphia, Athens WGAU Radio Talk Show Host and Co-Host with Barbara Dooley, and weekly columnist for the Athens Banner Herald. He was the son of the late Susie West Mendenhall and Fowell Hill Mendenhall, Sr. He was preceded in death by his wife of 34 years, Carolyn Hussey Mendenhall.
Survivors: Brother – David Mendenhall (Jayne) of Athens; 3 Sisters-In-Law – Barbara H. Lewis (Charles) of Conyers, Patricia Hussey and Linda H. Peacock (Emory) of Eastman; 3 Brothers-In-Law – L.G. Hussey (Jane) of Sparta, Marion Hussey (Rita) of Alamo, and William Hussey of Eastman; 5 Nieces and 7 Nephews – Ashley (Mendenhall) Meijerink (Robert), Wes Mendenhall (Anna), Susan P. Southerland (Gant), Claire Asadorian (Ron), Rebecca Ethredge (Pat), Amitie Hussey, Robert Peacock (Brandi), Christopher Lewis (Crystal), Patrick Lewis (Heather), Jamie Hussey (Vicki), Joel Hussey (Helen), and Austin Hussey; 11 Great Nieces – Zoe, Kelsey, Adeline, Phoebe, McKinley, Emily Grace, Raygan, Anna Beth, Judith, Kate, and Caroline; 5 Great-Nephews – Evan, Edward James, Towns, Joel, and Will.
The family may be contacted at the Mendenhall residence, 102 Riverbottom Way, Athens, and the David Mendenhall residence, 104 Woodhaven Court, Athens.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Gaissert Methodist Church, 2191 Gaissert Church Road, Sparta, GA 31087.
