Athens, GA and Topsail Beach, NC - William Laurence 'Bill' Hayward, age 72, passed away on Saturday, March 6, 2004 after a long battle with cancer. He had just returned from a family ski trip to Colorado,when he became seriously ill with pneumonia.
William was the son of the late Laurence W. Hayward and Rose N. Hayward. He was born in Copper Hill, Tennessee on November 26, 1931, and grew up in Madison, New Jersey. He attended Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, graduating in 1953 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He subsequently served in the U.S. Army for two years, stationed in Germany. He completed the Business Management Program at the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce, University of Pennsylvania in 1963, and was selected to attend the Advanced Management Program at the Graduate School of Business Administration, Harvard University in 1972.
He began a distinguished 35 year career with Westinghouse in 1956 and held many positions within the company, including Sales and Marketing Manager of the Steam Turbine Division in Philadelphia and Vice President and General Manager of the Power Systems Project Division in Pittsburgh. He was promoted to General Manager of the Distribution Transformer Division in Athens in 1980 and eventually to Vice President of this Division until his retirement in 1990.
Bill had a passion for life that he shared with everyone that he met. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends, and he especially loved playing with his grandchildren. He was a seasoned and accomplished snow skier, deep sea fisherman, gardener, golfer, and tennis player.
He was preceded in death by his brother, John, of Madison, WI and several of his dearest friends. William is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Fogg Hayward; his three daughters: Janet Hayward Friday of Danville, PA, Carolyn Hayward-Williams of Guildford, England, and Susan Hayward Touchette of Basalt, CO; and six grandchildren: Sarah and Dylan Friday, Lizzie and Emily Williams, and Ellie and William Touchette.
A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, March 11, at 10:30 a.m. at the Athens First United Methodist Church with Dr. Bill Britt officiating. A private burial will be held following the service.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Bernstein Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 1060 Gaines School Road, Ste B-2, Athens, GA 30605.
