Charles S. Skokan, 89, of Mineola, died July 30, 2013, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. There was a visitation with the family, Friday, Aug. 2, 2013, at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Bayliss Park Chapel in Council Bluffs. Funeral services were Saturday, Aug. 3 at the funeral home with Rev. Mark Heath officiating. Interment was in Silver Creek Cemetery in Hancock, with a lunch following at Epworth United Methodist Church. The family will direct memorials.
Charles was born July 9, 1924, in Council Bluffs, to the late Francis B. and Goldie (Branson) Skokan. He graduated Thomas Jefferson High School in 1942. Charles married Phyllis L. Bird April 28, 1962. They were blessed with two children, Chuck and Jenifer. Charles and his twin brother, Bert, owned and operated Skokan Brothers Trucking. Charles then worked as a scale man for Van Nuys Grain Co. before retiring from Lewis Central Schools in 1989.
In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his wife Phyllis in 2001 and his twin brother, Bert Skokan. Charles is survived by his daughter, Jenifer Skokan; son, Chuck Skokan; grandchildren, McKenzie and Zackary Lenihan all of Council Bluffs; "Smokie" the cat in Mineola; niece, Linda Lauridsen; great nieces and nephews.
