She was born March 19, 1922, in Pacific Junction to Gene and Katie (Curtis) Richardson. She was raised on a farm and attended her first eight years of school at the old Bethlehem County School west of Pacific Junction. She graduated from the Pacific Junction high School in 1939.
Shortly after graduating, Lucille married Henry Kates, who later served in World War II. They had a daughter, Judy and two sons, Kenny and Rodney.
In 1954, they moved to California and resided in the El Monte area for three years, before resettling in Terre Haute. Here they had another son, Michael.
Lucille and Henry owned and operated Kates Floor Services for many years. She also attended beauty school and had a small shop in her home for a short time.
Lucille was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Seelyville, Ind., and had a strong, true faith in God.
She was a kind, loving, gracious woman, who loved her family and spending time with her grandchildren. Until her health started failing, she loved being in the yard and messing with her flowers. She was always there for the family and friends with a loving heart and willing ear.
