Bud was born Dec. 31, 1930, in Silver City, to E. W. and Eunice (Moore) Schroeder. Bud was a socially active resident of San Antonio since the 1950s, and a member of the Petroleum Club. Bud's formative years were spent on his parents' farm in Treynor. After graduating in 1945, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served during the Korean War. After his discharge he moved to Texas, and worked weekends in the oil fields drilling for black gold. His weekdays were spent at Kelly Field. Eager to retire at the age of 55, he jokingly kept a calendar up to that time that marked off months, days, hours and minutes. His life-long passions included oil and gas interests, deep-sea fishing, world travel, wine making, gardening and friends. He remained a bachelor despite some serious romantic relations. Throughout his life, Bud was committed to family, and his two nieces and nephew, who regarded Bud as surrogate dad.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents, E. W. and Eunice (Moore) Schroeder; two sisters, Theil Nielsen of Council Bluffs and Jeannine Shellman of San Antonio; and his beloved "project," niece Patti Shellman of San Antonio. Bud is survived by nephew, Michael (Catherine) Shellman of San Marcos, Texas; niece, Janet (Paul) Sherman of Ithaca, N.Y.; grandniece, Alison Shellman and grandnephew, Alexander Reeve. He will be remembered as an affable, opinionated, humorous, sometimes cantankerous straight shooter.
