Saundra Lee Barkus, daughter of Edwin L. and Clara Mae (Johnson) Barkus, was born Oct. 2, 1953 in Council Bluffs. She graduated from Glenwood Community High School in 1971. After graduation she worked at Glenwood State Hospital School and Hillside Manor. In 1986 she received her A.S. in Nursing from Iowa Western Community College. Following graduation she began her lifelong career in the nursing profession. She spent several years as a Director of Nursing at area nursing facilities. Over the past 13 years she enjoyed her position as a nurse consultant with Care Initiatives, fulfilling her love for geriatric care.
Saundra was blessed with two children, Dain and Jess. They were her motivation in life, always striving to give them the best. However, the light of Saundra's life were her six beautiful grandchildren. She stated in a letter to her children, "They filled my heart with love. When your children have children it seems to complete the circle. My world has always been brighter when they were around. I love them so." Saundra loved to gather together with her family, and celebrating the holidays were her favorite. But most of all, she loved her poodle "Deuce".
Saundra held her friends very near and dear, as they were a big part of her life. She enjoyed her trips to Okoboji, the orchard and local vineyards, as they were filled with an incredible amount of conversation and laughter.
Saundra is survived by her children, Dain (Ashley) Lundvall and Jess (Leana) Lundvall; grandchildren, Emily, Clara, Nile, Shay, Lyric, and Jagger; mother, Clara Mae Barkus; brother, Doug (Jeanette) Barkus; sister, Yvonne Stouder; many nieces, nephews and a host of special friends.
Saundra is preceded in death by her father, Edwin.
