James E. McCallan, 43, of Ashland, Ore., formerly of Glenwood, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012. Services are pending at the Pauley Jones Funeral home in Harlan. A memorial service will be held in Glenwood at a later date. Memorials are directed to the family.
Jim was born Nov. 8, 1969, in Council Bluffs, to Perry and Karen McCallan. He graduated from Glenwood High School in 1988. Following graduation he served in the Marine Corp from 1988-1992. He was a diesel mechanic with the air wing in Cherry Point, N.C. He then graduated from the University of Iowa in 1999. Jim dabbled in poetry and was proud to have been invited to the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop.
In November of 2000 he married Amy Arkfeld. He was very devoted to his children and recently became a proud grandpa.
After the 9/11 attacks he was inspired to paint the barns at his home in Schleswig to represent our American flag and the state flag of Iowa. When his family later moved to Harlan, he painted his barn there as well to represent the state flag of Iowa.
James is survived by his wife Amy McCallan of Ashland; children: Bryenna of Vine Grove, Ky., and her fiancé Austin Hunborg; Taryn; Rayme; Avrey; Kane and Devroe; granddaughter, Kairi; parents Karen and Perry McCallan of Glenwood; and sister Andrea Williams and husband Mike of Glenwood; grandmother, Mary McCallan of Council Bluffs; first wife, Tamara and her daughter Shayna; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and many friends.
