Jerold Fred "Jerry" Hurst, 82, Glenwood, died May 31, 2014, in Council Bluffs. Funeral services are Friday, June 6, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Peterson Mortuary, Glenwood. Larry Hurst and Steve Jacobsen will officiate. Private interment will be at a later date. A memorial fund has been established.
Jerold was the youngest child born to Carl and Ona Hurst on Aug. 28, 1931, on the family homestead near Glenwood.
Jerry was raised on the family farm and graduated from Glenwood High School in 1949. He was employed as a trade carpenter for Leonard Edwards. Jerry then faithfully served his country as a sergeant during the Korean Conflict from 1951-53 and was stationed in England and Germany. He was a life member of the VFW in Glenwood. Following his honorable discharge, Jerry continued as a carpenter for Hugh Edwards and the Glenwood Resource Center until his retirement.
Jerry loved gardening, woodworking and made beautiful clocks among other projects. He also enjoyed reading, listening to good easy music and traveling. Jerry attended several University of Iowa football games with his friend Jerry Kaiman. He also liked Jays Basketball, Royals Baseball and spending time with his family. Jerry had resided at Glen Haven Home since 2007 and considered the staff as his family as well. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Preceding Jerry in death were his parents; siblings, Margaret (Jim) Newman; Carl H. (Bessie) Hurst; Jack (Betty) Hurst; nephew, Jim F. Newman, III; and niece, Penny S. Sexton.
Survivors include his brother Ronald (Ruth) Hurst, Glenwood; nieces and nephews, Gary (Reta) Newman; Marlis Newman; Larry C. (Carol) Hurst; Sherry A. (Leslie) Peterson; Dan E. Hurst; Denise (Steve) Jacobsen; Steve Hurst; Leslie (Kyle) Lausee; Barb (Curt) Miller; Valerie (Kevin) Anderson; numerous great-nieces and nephews; great-great-nieces and nephews and many friends.
