Floyd David Bowen, age 87, of Hastings, passed away Monday, April 30, 2018, at the Good Samaritan Society in Villisca. Floyd was born May 9, 1930, in Kelton, Texas the son of Noel Nathan and Mary Alice (Gifford) Bowen.
He was raised in Colorado where he attended school. He moved to Iowa in 1947 and was united in marriage to Virginia McKinney on May 21, 1950, in Henderson. Floyd was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War. He was in the Signal Corps and was a pole lineman serving in Germany and France. During this time, he attended the coronation of Queen Elizabeth. After his honorable discharge from military service on Dec. 14, 1953, Floyd returned home and was a farmhand eventually moving to their current farm southwest of Emerson. Over the years, Floyd sold Golden Harvest Seed and Archer Oil. Floyd enjoyed working the wheat harvest from Oklahoma to the Canadian border from 1972 until 1988. He was a longtime member of both the Henderson and Emerson American Legion Posts, the NFO, and the Emerson Bowling League. He enjoyed playing jokes, visiting with people, playing cards, especially pitch, two step-dancing, tractor pulls, reading and watching westerns, spending time with his kids and grandkids, watching sports and horses. He even rode bucking broncos and broke horses.
Preceding him in death were his parents; son, Gerald Edward Bowen in infancy; brothers, LeRoy, Loyd and wife Gladys, and David Bowen; sister, Joan Humphrey and husband Ted; and sister-in-law, Evelyn Osler. Survivors include his wife of almost 68 years, Virginia; children, Randall Bowen of Oklahoma City, Okla.; Kathy Doyle and husband Pat of Imogene; Dave Bowen and companion Sue McDonald of Emerson; Cindy Stoehr and husband Doug of Sahuarita, Ariz.; and Sherri Nissen and husband Jerry of Prescott; grandchildren, Chris Doyle and wife Rosie of Bloomington, Ill.; Jenny Wuebker and husband Randy of Lorimor; Patrick Doyle and wife Brooke of Emerson; Josh Bowen and wife Laura of Imogene; Nathan Bowen and wife Bailey of Hastings; Bryan Bowen and wife Kylie of Emerson; Eric Stoehr and wife Lindsay of Dunlap; Jessica Trautz and husband Michael of Maryville, Mo.; Alyssa Dea and husband Dalton of Walnut; Amanda Nissen of Creston; and Reagan Eubank and husband Brett of Red Oak; great-grandchildren, Morgan and Kate Doyle; Taylor and Nate Purdy; Blake, Abbie, Cy, and Kenzie Wuebker; Madison, Payton and Kirby Doyle; Molly, Emma and Zane Bowen; Kymber and Connor Stoehr; and Liam, Aidan and Griffin Eubank; sisters-in-law, Gina Bowen of Knox City, Texas; Bernadine Pendegraft of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and Janice Duysen of Des Moines; brother-in-law, Jim Osler of Pacific Junction; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 4, 2018, at the Emerson United Methodist Church. Burial was in the Farm Creek Cemetery at Henderson. A memorial fund is being established in Floyd's name.
