Jackie was born to Carn A. and Frances K. (Wilson) Godsey on Jan. 25, 1925, in Council Bluffs. She was the second of eight children; Jim, Jackie, Kathryn, John, Steve, Sam, Scott and Marguerite. The family moved to the Folsom family farm when the depression made it necessary. She later married Kirk C. Stearns, an electrician's mate, aboard the U.S.S. Tullibee (Submarine/ New London, Conn.) in 1942. They moved to Vallejo, Calif., where they lived until he shipped out. Jackie moved back to the Pacific Junction area, while he was away. She worked at the Martin Bomber factory in Omaha, Neb. Sadly, Kirk was killed in 1944 during the war in the Pacific. Jackie's father Carn became a prisoner of the Germans' along with his entire platoon, while in northern Africa.
Jackie met Winston R. Holmes when he came back to the Glenwood area after serving his country. They married June 9, 1945, in Glenwood. Winston remained in the National Guard as a U.S. Property dispersing officer. Their first of four children, Candace, was born in 1949, Winston, Jr. "Rick" in 1953, Kathryn in 1954 and Stephen in 1959.
Winston worked for the Cudahy Packing Company in sales, which eventually led to the family moving from Folsom to Aliance, Neb., and also the Scottsbluff area. In 1955-56 they moved to Bartlett. During this time, Jackie began to enjoy making ceramics at which she excelled. She was a wonderful cook and seamstress. In fact when Candace married, she sewed the wedding dress, all of the bridesmaids and other various dresses for the wedding. She worked for the Glenwood State Hospital School for 20 years as an R.T.W. on night watch.
In December 1978, Winton died, not long after they bought the house on Walnut Street.
Preceding Jacqueline in death were her parents, both husbands, daughter, Kathryn Lahrs and three siblings, Jim Godsey, John Godsey and Kathryn Taylor. She is survived by her children, Candace E. and husband Robert Huff; Winston R. "Rick" Holmes, Jr. all of Glenwood; Stephen John Holmes and Judy Scanlon of Lincoln, Neb.; seven grandchildren, Anthony, Kathy Jo, Kourtney, Stephen, Jr., Ashley, Jennifer, Rebecca; many great-grandchildren, siblings, Scott Godsey, Steve Godsey, both of Missouri; Sam Godsey of Council Bluffs; Marguerite Oliphant of Pacific Junction; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended relatives and many friends who have always considered her family.
