Karen L. Batten, 62, Council Bluffs, formerly of Glenwood, died March 26, 2014, at her home. Recitation of the Rosary was Tuesday, April 1, 2014 followed by visitation with the family at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Bayliss Park Chapel in Council Bluffs. Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m., Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 1 Bluff St. Rev. Chuck Kottas, will be the celebrant. Interment will be in the Glenwood Cemetery with a lunch following in the Kottas Social Hall at St. Peter's Church. Memorials are suggested to St. Peter's Catholic Church.

Karen was born April 26, 1951, in Bancroft to the late Walter and Mildred (Heinen) Elsbecker. She graduated from Humboldt High School in 1969 and married Jackie Batten July 21, 1969. They were blessed with four children. Karen continued her education at IWCC, earning her associate's degree in 1990 and her bachelor's degree in psychology from Creighton University in 1994. Karen worked at Child Connect-Children's Square, USA from 2001-2011 then January 2014 to present as a family advocate coordinator. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church; St. Ann's Altar and Rosary Society; founder and president of Special Friends from 1997-2013; served on the Iowa Governor's Developmental Disabilities Council from 2001-2004 as well as the Partner's in Policy Making-Project of GDDC in 1997; served on the Vocational Rehabilitation Advisory Committee from 1996-1998; Persons with Disabilities Support Group from 1996-1999; CPC Transportation Work Group 1996-1997 and the Children's Crisis Center from 1991-1992. Karen was a volunteer for the Iowa Protection and Advocacy Services, serving as president for two years and treasurer for three years and sat on the board of directors from 1999-2004. She received honor awards from Phi Theta Kappa and Alpha Omicron Tau chapter from IWCC.
In addition to her parents, Karen was preceded in death by her daughter, Sara Ann Batten in 1981; and one sister. Karen is survived by her husband of 44 years, Jackie Batten, Sr., Council Bluffs; daughter, Kristine L. (Mike Pein) Batten, Glenwood; sons, Jackie L. (Carol) Batten, Jr. and William W. "Billy" Batten all of Council Bluffs; three step-grandchildren, Miles, Ashlea and Kyle; two step-great-grandchildren, Brooklynn Leerhoff and Chance Pein; one brother and two sisters.
