Virginia Pauline (Byers) Vohs, one of five children of Maude Ellen (Niles) and Orthello Vernellan Byers, Jr. was born on July 12, 1923, in Glenwood. She graduated from the Glenwood High School with the Class of 1940. Her parents owned and operated a dairy where her job was "bottle-washer". Later, Virginia was a telephone operator until 1955.
Virginia and Henry Reno Vohs, Jr. were united in marriage on Aug. 3, 1947, at the Grace United Methodist Church in Glenwood. Virginia became a housewife when the couple was blessed with two children, Frederic and Sally.
The couple farmed on the Vohs family farm until moving to a farm in the Bartlett area in 1951, where they raised crops, cattle, hogs, ducks, geese and chickens. The favorite family pets included a skunk, cats and dogs. In December 1992, the couple retired from farming and moved to live in Glenwood.
Virginia was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, the Faith Circle and was a 35-plus year member of TOPS. She enjoyed cooking, baking, oil painting, sewing, knitting and crocheting, along with spending time in her garden and would can her produce from the garden.
Virginia passed away at the Glen Haven Home in Glenwood on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018, at the age 95 years, two months and 10 days. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, siblings, Ellen, Roy, Geneva and Orthello III (Buzz); former neighbors, grandma Ruby and grandpa Lawrence Johnson and special friends.
Virginia is survived by her children, Sally Vohs and Fred Vohs, both of Glenwood; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of special friends.
Funeral service was at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2018, at the Grace United Methodist Church in Glenwood. Memorials are to Grace United Methodist Church. Loess Hills Funeral Home of Glenwood in charge of arrangements.
