DOUGLAS HILLIARD THOMSON(1931 - 2014)

Thomson, Douglas Hilliard, beloved father, husband and long-time resident of Orange California, died on June 19, 2014 after a protracted illness. He was born on October 22, 1931 in Evanston, Illinois as the only child of Scottish immigrant, Andrew James Thomson, and Frances Hilliard Thomson. He received education at the Elgin Academy then spent a year at Lawrence College before joining the U.S. Army where he served overseas and cultivated an interest in electronics. He returned home in 1954 to marry Nancy Ruth Culver whom he had met at Lawrence. During the next four years he completed his degree in Electrical Engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology while working nights for AT&T in Chicago. During that time, his two children were born. Upon graduation, he moved the family to Southern California to take a job with Hughes Aircraft in Culver City. In 1962, he purchased a home in Orange, California, where he would raise his family and reside for the rest of his life. Over the next 50 years, he was fruitfully employed in both electrical and computer engineering and was a senior project engineer on consequential projects for several companies including Beckman Instruments, Astrodata, Lear Siegler, Western Digital, and tech start-ups. He also served on advisory groups to IEEE. Declining health ultimately forced him to retire from full-time work at the age of 79. Outside of work, he enjoyed several hobbies but was mainly dedicated to the success and happiness of his family and to church and community service. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Culver Thomson; children, Kim and Scott Thomson; daughter-in-law, Lydia Ortiz Thomson; and three grandchildren, Andrew Thomson, Heather Pitt, and Sarah Thomson. A memorial service will be held on July 19, 2014 at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Orange, CA. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in memory of Douglas H. Thomson to the St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation/Hospice of Orange (https://donate.sjo.org/).
