Melissa Ann Alaniz

Alaniz, Melissa Ann, 16, of Garden Grove, CA, passed away on Monday, July 30, 2007 at Children's Hospital of Orange. She had aggressively been fighting cancer for the last 27 months. At the CHOC hospital, she was known throughout the staff members as "the girl with the big Colgate smile." Treatment after treatments, good or bad, she was always smiling. Not only did Melissa love everyone around her, she had quite the fondness for animals. She had dreamed of becoming a veterinarian and to help her in accomplishing this dream, she owned 2 dogs, 3 cats, and several fish. She was very determined and focused on completing her education. Melissa had established a 4.0 GPA while attending Orange High and being home-schooled. She was very involved with her studies up to her last admittance into CHOC. Melissa was a girl with a heart of gold. She never complained of her chemotherapy treatments or of the several surgeries she had endured in her battle against cancer. Family and friends were truly inspired by Melissa's strength, hope, determination, and her refusal to give up on life. She had a strong faith in God and always believed in helping others whether it be in this world or the next. In the days before her passing, Melissa made a statement for those who knew her to remember: "The cancer may have taken my body and organs, but it didn't take me. God did, He needed me; plus Katie needs me to help her with all of the kids from CHOC." Melissa will be missed greatly.
