We mark the passing of a remarkable man. Tom Angell, a national and international champion, an All-American in short distance Masters Swimming, was training for fast lap sprints Sunday when his great heart stopped. Tom was a U.S. Air Force veteran, a Master's degree recipient from the University of Pittsburgh, and a long time staffer at UCI. He was a beloved father, devoted companion, friend, counselor, and dedicated competitor. He was inspiring to those who knew him.
Though of humble origins in Pittsburgh, he transcended racial barriers and came to influence people from all walks of life with his intelligence, compassion, and charisma. He could tell a joke, fortify a broken soul or provide guidance to a broken family. He was a man who enjoyed the love and respect of everyone who met him. Tom raised his daughter as a single parent and maintained a successful psychotherapy practice in Orange County for over 30 years. He was a credible magician, loved classic Z-cars, and was a serious jazz aficionado, particularly partial to Sarah Vaughn.
Tom is survived by his loving daughter Lisa Angell, his sister Natalie Buchanan and nephew Craig Brock of Pittsburgh, his life-partner Celeste Torrens, and numerous family members who knew him as "Skip."
His was an extraordinary life and he lived it well.
Services will be held Saturday, October 26th at 12:30 p.m. at Fairhaven Memorial Park in Santa Ana, CA.
