WILLIAM E. FILLMORE

Fillmore, William E., age 99, died Friday, March 7, 2014 in San Clemente, CA.

Born in Zanesville, OH, Bill grew up in Columbus, OH. He received a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from The Ohio State University in 1936. After graduation, he joined Babcock & Wilcox for a year and in 1937, he moved to Toledo, OH and joined Owens Illinois as a plastics design and development engineer. With the exception of his US Navy service from 1944 to 1946, he remained with OI for a total of 60 years. He was considered a pioneer in plastic and polymer engineering.

In 1999, he was the recipient of the College of Engineering Distinguished Alumnus Award and in 2006, The Benjamin G. Lamme Meritorious Achievement Medal from the College of Engineering at Ohio State. After retiring to San Clemente in 1999, he was a member of the Orange County OSU Alumni Club and attended most of the football game watches and events.

Bill was a 32-degree Mason and a member of The Grand Lodge of F. & A.M. of Ohio (Northern Light Lodge) in Maumee.

He is survived by his daughter, Julie Miner (San Clemente, CA); son, Jim Fillmore and his wife Kathy (Tampa, FL); grandsons, Andrew and Tom; and many nieces and nephews and their families.

Memorial Services are pending. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that, in his honor, contributions be sent to the William Edgerton Fillmore Fund for Excellence in Mechanical Engineering (Endowment Fund 642200), that he established in 2002.
