FREDERICK SHEFFIELD Obituary

Sheffield, Frederick J., M.D., born November 5, 1923 in Kaysville, Utah, passed away peacefully at his home in Tustin, California, on December 8, 2009. Fred graduated from the University of Utah and from Temple University School of Medicine. In addition to pursuing academic goals, he was active in sports beginning in grammar school and continuing into medical school. He excelled in the high jump, broad jump, and low hurdles, setting winning records in many national, state and local meets. Fred played basketball for the University of Utah, serving as Captain of the NCAA's 1944 National Collegiate Basketball Championship Team. In 1946, he signed a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Warriors, playing as a starting forward while attending medical school. His professional basketball career was short-lived however due to the demands of medical school. After graduating from medical school, Fred undertook a full-time military/medical career with the U.S. Army, retiring in 1969, attaining the rank of Colonel. In addition to many assignments in the United States, he also served in the Far East and Africa. His second career was as a Physician for the County of Orange in southern California and he served as a member of the faculty of the University of California, Irvine, Medical School. He is survived by his wife, Kari; three children, Laurey Zayac (Dr. E. J. "Joe") of San Antonio, TX, Sari Latta (Michael) of Sacramento, CA and Flint Sheffield of Sacramento, CA; seven grandchildren, LCDR Kevin Zayac (Erica) stationed in Bahrain, Whitney Bonner (Bryant) of San Antonio, TX, Dr. Emily Boyd (Colin) of Houston, TX, Ian Latta of San Francisco, CA, Travis, Annie and Chelsea Latta all of Sacramento, CA; and five great grandchildren, Sydney, Zachary and Andrew Bonner and Benjamin and Bradley Zayac. A private graveside service will be held at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon, Ca. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. I grew up with F.J in Kaysville. He was one of my best friends. In 1945 at the end of WW II, he was my "best man" when I married Helen Smith in Salt Lake City. After that, we lost track of each other, and I finally learned about his life and death from this obituary. Reading it was a sad and nostalgic experience. Sometime I would like to meet Kari and the family.

Dear Kari: Dorothy and I would like to express our kindest condolences to you and the entire Sheffield family at this time of grief.
I considered Fred my best friend while attending the University of UtAh. He was the best all around athlete that I have ever played with or competed against. He was a kind and gentle giant. Love to you for taking such good loving care of your husband and our friend when he needed you the most. Herb and Dorothy Wilkinson
