JAMES BOEKE Obituary

Boeke, James Frederick passed away at the age of 76, on September 26, 2014, shortly after being diagnosed with Acute Leukemia. He was born and raised in Ohio where he completed his undergraduate work at Heidelberg University. He later completed his Master's Degree at Pepperdine University. Jim was drafted by the NFL, where he had a successful nine year career with the Los Angeles Rams, Dallas Cowboys, and New Orleans Saints. Jim met his wife, Peggy Nettleship on a blind date. Three short months later they were united in a marriage that lasted 42 years. Peggy succumbed to oral cancer in 2008. Between football seasons, Jim was a substitute teacher which eventually led to a full time teaching and coaching position at Westminster High School for 22 years. He also acted on a regular basis in T.V. shows, commercials, movies, and plays. His most recognized appearances were in After MASH, Coach, Forest Gump, Heaven Can Wait, and the A-Team. He is survived by his daughters, Dawn Boeke of Nashville, Tennessee; Chante' and her husband, Kevin Tilden of San Clemente, CA; Kelly and husband, Dave Walters of Huntington Beach, CA; his precious grandchildren, Jackson Tilden, Faith Tilden, and Kelsey Walters; and brother-in-law, Larry Nettleship and wife, Kay of San Saba, Texas. Jim will be greatly missed by his nieces and nephews, cousins, and vast numbers of friends and neighbors. Jim's special companion, his dog, Scooby, will miss their daily walks and time together. Jim expressed his faith in Jesus Christ through his dedication to his church, Voyage Calvary Chapel, his love of family, positive attitude, infectious personality, and desire to help anyone in need. The service will be handled by Heritage-Dilday Memorial Services on October 2, 2014 at 2 PM at the Reformation Lutheran Church, 15750 Magnolia Street, Westminster, CA 92683. The burial will be in Locker Cemetery, San Saba County, Texas on October 11, at 11 AM.

I had Mr Boeke as my English teacher back in 78/79.
I always liked him, and was star struck that my teacher was an actor. Lol
I was majorly shocked when I was watching Forrest Gump, and saw him show up on screen! Even all those years later, I still recognized him. I've been reminiscing my high school days, and was thinking of him recently, so I looked him up, which is how I found this memorial. Although he was only my teacher for a couple of years, I've often thought of him, and remembered him fondly as a nice man, a good teacher, and a wonderful actor. Though I saw him in only a few things, (I never watched Star Trek)
He was always entertaining in anything he did.
Rest well Mr. Boeke

I will always remember Mr Boeke for teaching me how to spell beautiful. He was very kind and would keep my mind at ease when I was feeling scared or numb. Thank you Mr Boeke...

September 25, 2020

I can close my eyes and still hear his big deep voice calling my name... “Case!”

I do not believe in coincidences! In 1972 My mother, sister and I arrived in Westminster just 8 weeks before school and sports began. I didn’t know anyone. Our family situation was tenuous volatile at best and we had moved a million times. I was crushed mentally and emotionally!

I know God led me to this incredible man, James Boeke.
First he was my freshman football coach. He taught me about football (I’d never played before) and it sparked my love of the sport.
Second he was my teacher. He offered sanctuary at lunchtime! Each day a bunch of teammates would eat lunch with Coach Boeke in his English class. He always had a new book he wanted me to read! He encouraged me when I didn’t think I had it in me!

Third and most importantly James Boeke was my mentor, and friend! My gratitude to him is unmeasurable!

Ask any Westminster Lion who had the honor to know Coach Boeke and you will hear nothing but amazing stories! He was that incredible, and it didn’t hurt that he was as fast as a gazelle, strong enough knock heads if anyone got into a fight, and smart as a whip!

When I was at the crossroads Coach Boeke made sure I was on the right path! Not to get mushy but he really saved my life!
I graduated from WHS.
I received a football scholarship.
I played college football.
I graduated college.
I received a teaching credential.
I received my MS in education
I became a teacher for at-risk students
I worked with heartbreaking situations
I finished my teaching career with ACCESS/OCDE

My sorrow is for the Boeke family and their loss!

I will remember how he lived and the impact he had/has made on my life path! Iam a better man for knowing him. I speak for all Lions when I say he was one of the Best Ever!

I owe him everything! May God Bless James Boeke!

Jim Boeke was my English teacher at Westminster HS in my sophomore year, 91/92. That was the first year I really enjoyed English class. He was a great teacher, always treated the students with respect. I was just watching an old episode of the A-Team and saw him and decided to look him up. My deepest condolences to his family. He was an amazing person and he touched a lot of lives.

Coach Boeke was one of the two most influential teachers I had in High School. I had such a good time in his English class, I actually signed up for his Sports Lit Class just because "he" taught it. I even talked my BFF into taking the class with me (and we were not interested in sports at the time). Mr Boeke had a natural ability to connect with us as teenagers and he was an amazing role model as well (on and off the football field). Loved Loved Loved him. The world is a sadder place without him, but heaven now has a wonderful Angel among them. I will always remember him with a smile and will be forever grateful for all that he taught me. He was one of a kind. RIP Coach Boeke.
