Joanne Johnson Plummer Combs Obituary
Combs, Joanne Johnson Plummer, passed away, surrounded by her family, November 9th at the City of Hope.
An Orange County native, Joanne was a popular song leader at Tustin High School and homecoming queen her sophomore year. She continued her education at Santa Ana College, where she was also a song leader. While attending UCLA she was an active member in the Alpha Phi sorority. Upon graduation from UCLA Joanne received her BA with a motion picture major. Eventually she earned her Master's degree, in elementary education, from the University of San Francisco.
Joanne, a fabulous ballroom dancer, instructed dance for the Arthur Murray Dance Studios in Santa Ana, before beginning her thirty-five year tenure at the Anaheim City School District. After seven years in the classroom, she was invited to join the I.T.V. studios where she taught 3rd and 4th grade science over closed circuit television to the entire school district. In this capacity she was able to utilize both her motion picture and education degrees.
In 1958 Joanne gave birth to her only child, Karen. Forever the optimist with bounds of energy, she approached motherhood in a down to earth yet magical way. More than anything she adored being a mother, then later a "Grandmama", and it showed!
An avid golfer, Joanne and her husband, Elmer Combs - former basketball coach at Huntington Beach High School, retired to Rancho Mirage twenty-one years ago. In true Joanne fashion, she became very active; serving on several committees, was president of the ladies golf club, shot three holes in one, and also won the President's club championship at Sunrise. Joanne and "E.C." enjoyed golf, bridge, traveling around the world, and of course dancing. They were always doing something fun with their many friends. Joanne was a bright light to everyone who knew her.
She is survived by her husband, E.C. Combs of Rancho Mirage; her daughter, Karen Hubert and granddaughters, Kaitlyn and Zoe Hubert, all of North Tustin. She will also be dearly missed by her three step-children, Randy Combs, Jennifer Williams and Terri Combs.
Her life will be celebrated on her birthday, January 7th, 2013, at the Sunrise Country Club Clubhouse at 2:00pm.
