GRETCHEN BROERING Obituary

Broering, Gretchen Born in Indianapolis, Indiana August 18, 1915, Gretchen passed away at her home on Balboa Island, August 27, 2010 of natural causes and surrounded by family, friends and the family doctor. Gretchen's parents, Lawrence and Frieda Broering, moved the family to South Pasadena in the 1920's where Gretchen and her brothers attended South Pasadena High School. After graduation in 1933 Gretchen attended UCLA as a member of one of the first classes to enroll at the new Westwood campus. As a Bruin Gretchen earned her teaching credential and went on to teach elementary school in the Los Angeles Unified School District for over 40 years. Since the 1950's Gretchen was a resident of Balboa Island commuting to LA to teach school. In Newport Beach Gretchen was active in the Assistance League, Hoag Hospital Auxiliary and a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church. She also served as a loyal participant in the Laguna Beach Methodist Art Association. An avid traveler, Gretchen is known for her love of leaving the comfort of home to explore the world. Her travels include trips to Europe, Asia, Australia, the Pacific Islands, the Middle East and several times "around the globe". This is her legacy to her many relatives and friends; to see other places and to experience foreign cultures as a way to appreciate God's creation and other people. A celebration of her life will be held at the family home on Balboa Island.

Edith Bevill and Gretchen were classmates at UCLA and life long friends. Gretchen and Edith (my mother) traveled many times together and also were joined by Blake Bevill (my Dad) on the European trips. They bought a VW in Germany and used it for transportation on one trip, than sent it back to CA. Gretchen traveled with us ( Jim / Nancy Bevill) on a trip to Redding, CA to celebrate my parents anniversary. She had such a wonderful recall of trips and dates plus enjoyed a wonderful, positive attitude. We really admired her and all she was in life. Best wishes to the family, with fond memories, Jim and Nancy Bevill, San Juan Capistrano, CA.

Dear Family of Gretchen, On behalf of my mother and father, I want to offer our condolences to you. Gretchen was one of my mom's favorite friends, if not her favorite traveling partner. My mom passed in 2009, dad is still with us. I will let him know about her passing when I see him tomorrow. Gretchen was an amazing person and always so kind not to mention interesting to visit with. Robyne Bevill Hartman, Blake and Edith's daughter.
