Philip Rube Hoffman

Hoffman, Philip Rube January 24, 1930- November 10, 2010. Successful businessman and surf legend Philip "Flippy" Hoffman died peacefully in Orange County California, surrounded by loving family and friends, after 80 years of life. Born in Glendale California to Rube P. Hoffman and Margaret S. Hoffman. Flippy is survived by his life partner of 31 years, Suzy Aplanalp; his brother and business partner, Walter (Trisha) Hoffman; daughter, Dana (Bill) Cederberg, and son, Marty (Santhi) Hoffman. He is also survived by grandchildren, Coral Lindberg, Forrest (Erica) Lindberg, Summer Cederberg, Matthew Cederberg, Timothy Hoffman, and great grandchildren Zoe Lindberg-Smith, Sydney Wylie, and Terra Sage Lindberg. Co-Owner of Hoffman California Fabrics, Flippy was a successful businessman, accomplished waterman, and surf legend. After graduating Hollywood High School, class of 1948, he went to Hawaii in the early 1950's and became one of the first California surfers to ride the big waves of Makaha. Flippy loved everything the ocean could provide, and became a pioneer of both big wave and tow in surfing. He worked as a commercial abalone diver for 10 years, was an avid scuba and skin diver, and enjoyed spending time at his beloved Channel Islands. He shared his love and knowledge of the ocean with his family and friends. Flippy lived his life as he wished. It was a life filled with adventure and purpose. He was loved and will be missed.
