William Flanagan Obituary

Flanagan, Rev. Dr. William L. "Flan" With his wife and daughter at his side, Bill Flanagan passed peacefully into the arms of his Lord & Savior on Saturday May 1st at his Newport Beach home, following a valiant fight against cancer. He was 70 years old. The oldest of three boys, Flan was born on Nov. 7, 1939 to Annette and Bradford Flanagan in Los Angeles, CA. He attended Los Angeles schools, graduating from Dorsey High in 1957. While attending the University of Redlands, Flan met his future wife Christy Pierce. They were married July 12, 1963, and were blessed by the birth of daughter Julie in 1967. Flan earned a B.A. degree from the University of Redlands, a Masters in Theology from Princeton Theological Seminary, and a Doctorate from Fuller Theological Seminary. From 1964 to 1968, he served as Youth Pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Burbank. He then moved to the First Presbyterian Church of Colorado Springs, CO, where he led the Singles Ministry and started a Divorce Recovery Workshop. In 1981, Flan joined St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Newport Beach as Minister of Missions and Singles. The Divorce Recovery Workshops he led for over 25 years remain an ongoing ministry of St Andrew's, having served over 13,000 men, women and children in Southern California and around the world. Flan was honored for his work in this field of ministry and was the author of a "How To" book on divorce recovery. As Pastor of Missions, Flan led trips that brought caring support along with the gospel message to people across the globe. He had a heart in particular for the people of Israel, Malawi and Kenya. With mission teams from St Andrew's, Flan helped build churches in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Flan led numerous groups to the Holy Land and taught at Bethlehem Bible College and throughout Kenya. Locally, Flan supported efforts to create a ministry of presence in underserved neighborhoods, through Shalimar Learning Center and with MIKA Christian Community Development Center in Costa Mesa. His dedication to Pacific Youth Correctional Ministries made him a regular fixture at the annual Juvenile Hall Christmas pageants. Flan helped St Andrew's forge a close partnership with Southern California Teen Challenge, a worldwide Christ-centered recovery program. He was part of the leadership team that developed "Partners in Christ," a discipleship ministry for Teen Challenge graduates. Flan's advocacy and support for the ministry of Teen Challenge continued beyond his 2005 retirement. from St. Andrew's. Attending the Teen Challenge 50th anniversary celebration in 2008 in New York City was a special highlight for him. Flan is survived by his wife of almost 47 years, Christy Pierce Flanagan, and daughter, Julie Marie. He was also the proud "adopted" father of Josephine Macharia Lowe (Jeff) and "Papa" to their children Joshua and Jonathan. In addition, Flan is survived by his brothers John and Robert (Sue); brother-in-law, Stephen Pierce (Karen); cousin, Carole Stone Bryant (Tom) and son John; nieces Stephanie Pierce Flanagan, Amy Pierce and Heather Flanagan Cross (Cliff); nephew, Tom Flanagan, and grand-nieces and nephews Maddie, Tommy, Leland and Audrey. A celebration of Flan's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 20 at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, 600 St. Andrew's Road, Newport Beach 92663. As Chairman of the DRW Trustees I would like to formally offer the condolences of everyone involved with DRW in the U.K. The impact of Bill's work in the ministry of divorce recovery will continue to be felt for many years to come.
Whilst most of the many thousands of people that have been helped by DRW in the U.K. never met Bill in person they feel that they know him well through the videos and will treasure his words of wisdom and encouragement for the rest of their lives.
We were so pleased to receive Bill's encouragement and blessing on our work - please be assured that we will continue the DRW ministry in his memory.

Although we have never met Bill, having been involved in around 20 Divorce Recovery Workshops we feel that we have come to know and love him through the video presentations that we watch each time. We and the thousands of people who have benefitted from the wisdom and honesty of this true man of God will be eternally grateful. Our condolences to his family and friends, we will pray that you know the loving presence of God during your grief.

Just wanted to say thank you for the work of DRW.

As a beneficiary of the DRW course in 1998 I was delighted and privileged to meet 'Flan' when he came to the UK to re-record the DRW videos in 2000.

Bill's love for his fellow man, and the gift he gave to so many in the DRW course has changed lives, including my own.

I will remember Bill with fondness and gratitude, and feel saddened by his passing.

My condolences to all his family and friends. May our ever-loving God bless you and support you in your grief.

Christy and Julie,
You know more than many the gifts that God gave to Bill, your loving Husband and Father. We, who knew him through Divorce Recovery Workshop here in the UK, are profoundly grateful for his vision, love and understanding to many thousands going through the break-up of meaningful relationships. We are blessed to have two sets of videos of 'Flan' giving his lectures. An American version from the 1980's and then an English version filmed when he visited us in Basingstoke in 2000. We owe so much to him and want you to know just how much he is loved here in UK. He will be sorely missed, but his legacy will live on for many years to come. We know he is now free from pain and is at peace. May you be comforted in your loss and know fully the peace and love of many whom you have never met who are praying for you now. God bless and tread boldly. Much love. David Revell (DRW Trustee and National Committee Member, Bath, England)

Christy and Julie,
I was so fortunate to make contact with "Bill" after more than 40 years. He was our youth pastor, along with you, Christy, in Burbank in the 1960's. You'll never know the profound effect you both had on my life. I wish we could go back to Arizona for Easter Week. It was my sincere pleasure to know you both. Lois and my prayers are with you all.

Christy and Julie,

We were so sorry to hear about Flan's passing but thankful he is no longer in pain and enjoying fellowshipping with our Lord and Saviour. He was such a wonderful witness for our Lord Jesus Christ in every aspect of his life. The memorial service was beautiful yesterday and I'm certain he was smiling down from Heaven listening in to what was said.

He played an important role in counseling Bruce and I prior to officiating at our wedding some 14 years ago. We were so pleased he could be a part of our special day!

We want to send you both our love and will continue to pray that God will strengthen and encourage you in these upcoming weeks and months.

Flan changed my life in such a dramatic way some 15 years ago! First, as a participant for two DRW sessions and then as a small-group leader for two more, I learned the gift of forgiveness.

Flan was a gentle and open-hearted soul. He didn't mince words. His honesty inspired me to face myself. Flan will be missed by many.

May God wrap His loving arms around Christy and Julie and give them a sense of peace.

Christy, You know how I loved Flan. He helped me see, grow and was there in some very difficult times. He changed my life like so many others that knew him. He was a mentor, a friend. and most importantly a brother in Christ. Even though I have not been able to attend our Thursday Morning Covent Breakfast, my heart and thoughts are always there every Thursday.

Working with Presbyterian Men in Los Ranchos Presbytery, helping in missions, and being a frequent St. Andrew's visitor, I had the extreme pleasure of working with this fine man of God. I will be forever grateful to him for his example and leadership

Flan was a long time host for Noseworthy Travel in leading pilgrim groups to Israel. He was also a great humanitarian. NTS and Israel have lost a friend in Dr. Bill Flanagan. He visited the old Jerusalem many times. Now he has residence in the New Jerusalem.

Dearest Christy and Julie,
Words fail us in knowing how to appropriately respond to Bill's homegoing. I'm confident he heard "well done, Bill, well done, good and faithful servant." Oh how we loved him and you precious two. May you find His strength IS perfect in all circumstances and situations. Please be assured of our deep love, care and prayer for you as you walk this journey, called grief. Give yourselves permission to grieve.
Much Love, Care, Prayer and Deep Sympathy, Donna and Dug
