JOHN ROBEY THOMPSON Obituary
Thompson, John Robey

I was born on October 12, 1938 at Ellis Hospital, Schenectady, NY and my parents are Elizabeth (Smith) Thompson and Edward (Tommy) Stoops Thompson. When I was 2 years old we moved to Marblehead, MA. Dad worked 39 years for the General Electric Company and our moves were at the request of the company depending on where dad was needed. Living in MA was fun because the seasonal changes were so dramatic; loved walking to Clifton beach and riding the waves in summer, playing in the tree leaves in the fall; snow fun and ice skating on Ware Pond in the winter; and the smell of spring with new flowers everywhere. When dad was asked to move to Cincinnati, OH in 1951, he was given enough time to find a lot and have a house he and mom designed and built for us on Concord Hills Circle in the Kenwood section of the city. "Owl Woods" was the backyard and a stream ran through it and I built a tree house overlooking the stream; what fun. I was active in Boy Scouts and earned my Eagle rank and traveled to CA for the 1953 Jamboree on Irvine Ranch (Newport Beach). Another move took place in 1955 (my senior year in high school) and San Marino, CA became our new home. Upon graduation from high school (1st graduating class from SMHS), I started attending U.S.C. majoring in architecture, but changed majors because my freehand drawing didn't meet the requirements. A 6 month active duty (5 1/2 years reserves) in the Marine Corps was very challenging but worth it. After graduating (B.A. Telecommunications), I worked at CBS Television City (1961-1968) and then an opportunity to go with Walt Disney Productions was offered and for 26 years I had various positions with "the mouse" first at the studio, then Imagineering, Walt Disney World and Disneyland. Along the way, I got married (1962), had a daughter, Kati (1963); and son, John (1975). After a divorce, I remarried (1989) to Dona Stevenson. I retired after 26 years, primarily due to medical reasons, and have worked part-time as a sales associate at Ham Radio Outlet (Anaheim) because I'm a licensed operator (K60HM), and also worked as a medical transcriber. Now with triplet grandchildren; (Bonnie, Claire and Thomas Robertson) and Andrew and Joshua Thompson, I do what all grandfathers do: spoil them when the chances come up. Trips to Disneyland are always fun with them along. I had a great life and will miss the relatives, friends and my wonderful wife now that I'm gone. Thanks for everything!

Service will be held Friday Aug. 22, 2014 10 am Saddleback Chapel, Tustin, with reception immediately following at the Mortuary. Burial to follow at 1:30 pm Inglewood Memorial Park. Hawaiian attire preferred. For those who wish, donations in John's name to: The . www.saddlebackchapel.com
