RICHARD ARDEN "DICK" CHURCH Obituary
Church, Richard "Dick" Arden, was born on January 14th, 1930 in San Francisco, California to Leighton and Magdalene Church. As a graduate of Burlingame High School's Class of 1947, Dick made his way south attending University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) graduating in 1953 with a Bachelor in Arts in Radio Production. Shortly after his college graduation, Dick enrolled in the U.S. Navy. During his tenure as a lieutenant naval officer, Dick spent about a year as a Captain of a Vessel Tug Boat in the Puget Sound in the State of Washington and two years in Japan. He recalled eating copious amounts of sushi, enough to last the rest of his life. Returning to civilian life with an honorable discharge, UCLA was again Dick's choice to pursue his Master's in Business. Dick's 51 year career in as a financial investment manager began in 1959 at Dean Witter (now Morgan Stanley) in Long Beach, CA. He moved his way farther south and settled in Newport Beach for the remainder of his life. Dick was passionate about the stock market (especially during the bullish times), extremely dedicated to his clients and respected by his colleagues. He retired from his illustrious finance career in 2010. In addition to his voracious appetite for business and finance knowledge, Dick was also a devoted Catholic always seeking spiritual understanding and practicing many small acts of kindness and philanthropy. He was a skilled skier, exceptional piano and tennis player, enthusiastic car aficionado, lover of taking walks (especially with his beloved dog, Oliver) and avid world traveler. Dick was the most wonderful father to his only daughter, Erin. Erin has a plethora of fond memories of her father including Dick's patient skiing, piano and tennis instruction and a weekly 'dinner and domino date' at his previous condo on Amigos Way. They also shared a love for playing tennis followed by a delicious breakfast. Dick also was an excellent friend to his younger brother, Robert "Bob" Church and cared a great deal for his nephews Jeff and Jason Church, Bob's two children. During the last years of his life, Dick received stellar care from Miguel, Peter, Roden, Mario, Tina, Cassidy and Donald from Coral Tree. Dick was an honorable, compassionate and generous man. He will be greatly missed, but will remain fondly in the memories of all who knew him. This world was left better by the presence of Dick Church - a true gentleman. Thank you for all you gave us, Dick, we all love you. Richard "Dick" Church died peacefully in his home after his 3+ year battle with vascular dementia on Friday, October 25th, 2013.
