DR. IRVING BERENT Obituary
Dr. Irving Berent passed away November 14, 2013 from injuries sustained from a fall. He died peacefully, surrounded by family.

Irv was born June 6, 1930, in Detroit, MI, and attended Central High School where he met his first wife, Arlene Horwitz. He then attended University of Michigan and completed medical school and his residency at Wayne State Medical School. Irv and his young family then moved to Oceanside, CA, to complete two years of service in the US Navy. They moved to Los Angeles, where Irv maintained a private practice in psychiatry for twenty years. A respected member of the LA Psychoanalytic Society and an adjunct professor of psychiatry at UCLA, Irv eventually joined the staff at Atascadero State Hospital in San Luis Obispo. There, he served as a psychiatrist for over 15 years. He was a serious scholar, an avid reader and a published author.

Irv retired to Laguna Woods, CA, where he met and married Jane Brandt. Irv and Jane loved to play chess, and he would often beat the "professionals" down at Laguna or Venice beach.

Irv loved music. He had a great ear and could play any song he heard on the harmonica. He loved to entertain friends and family and he performed with several bands at Laguna Woods. His love for music was shared with and passed on to his four sons.

Irv loved family. As a father with young sons, he enjoyed taking them camping, canoeing and sailing. Most of all, he enjoyed relaxing and spending time with his loved ones.

Irv was preceded in death by his son, Craig Berent, at age 18 and by his grandson, Matthew Brandt, at age 2. These losses gave him a profound appreciation for the beauty and fragility of life.

Irv is survived by his wife, Jane Brandt Berent. He also leaves behind his sons and their wives, Larry and Barbara, Michael and Erica, and Jeffrey and Debra. He also leaves behind his first wife, Arlene Berent. He will be deeply missed by Jane's son and daughter, David Brandt and Katie Brandt Covill. He will be mourned by his grandchildren, Emily Berent, Craig

Bullard-Berent, Court Bullard-Berent, Carolyn Brandt, Nicole Brandt, Todd Brandt, Chole Covill and Ruby Covill and by his great-granddaughters, Naliyah and Zoe Bullard-Berent.

Contributions in Irv's honor should be sent to .
