Eugene Milton Mitchell Obituary
Mitchell, Eugene Milton, a man truly treasured by his family, friends and community, passed away early March, 24th 2014 after a short illness.

Eugene (Gene) was born in Los Angeles, California on February 15th, 1923 and attended Compton High School. After enrolling at UCLA, Gene enlisted in the U.S. Navy following the United States entry into WWII. After a promotion to Ensign, Gene contracted tuberculosis and was sent back to California. After a year, Gene recovered completely and reentered UCLA, joining Sigma Pi fraternity and establishing the "Old Men's Club", whose members consisted of returning soldiers within the fraternity. After graduating UCLA with a degree in Chemistry, Gene went on to work at U.S. Steel where he met his future wife, Elizabeth Bruce Handy on the dance floor of a company party. In 1951, after a six month courtship, the couple married and later settled in Palos Verdes, California with their two children. Gene became very active in the Palos Verdes Tennis Club; and later, he and Elizabeth (Brucie) began an enduring passion for breeding and showing Great Danes. Their kennel name, "Von Raseac," became and continues to be synonymous with beautiful and gentle Great Danes. After U.S. Steel, Eugene switched career direction and went to work in Personnel at North American Rockwell, later leaving to work as Personnel Manager at Bell and Howell; finally returning as Personnel (Human Resources) Manager at North American Rockwell in Newport Beach -where he retired. Upon retirement, Gene and Brucie moved to Fallbrook, California and enjoyed a life of travel and leisure-where Gene was active in golf, tennis and avocado farming. In 2001, after Brucie suffered a stroke, Gene and Brucie moved north again to Laguna Woods where Brucie passed away in 2009 after 58 years of marriage. In late 2010, Gene met Margaret Adams Simon on yet another dance floor at the Laguna Woods Tennis Clubhouse. They married four months later in December, 2010 at Geneva Presbyterian Church in Laguna Woods. Happily remarried, Gene and Margaret shared their passion for tennis, golf, church, travel and social activities, traveling between Margaret's Palm Springs tennis villa and their Laguna Woods home. Besides being the cherished husband to both Elizabeth (Brucie) and Margaret Mitchell, Gene also was a truly devoted father to David Mitchell, Claudia Michaels and her husband Kevin Michaels; as well as the most loving grandfather to his two granddaughters, Morgan and Megan Michaels. Gene's uniquely kind and generous spirit will be deeply and sincerely missed by his family and his friends, as well as everyone his life touched during his well-lived 91 years.

Memorial services will be held at Geneva Presbyterian Church, 24301 El Toro Road, Laguna Woods, CA. 92637 on Saturday, April 12th at 2:00pm with a reception to follow.
