ALICEMARIE STOTLER Obituary

Stotler, Alicemarie Huber, born May 29, 1942, daughter of James and Loretta Huber of Los Angeles, California. Survived by her beloved husband of 42 years, James Allen Stotler, and extended family members, died peacefully at home on June 9, 2014. A United States District Judge appointed by President Reagan in 1984, Judge Stotler previously was an Orange County Superior Court Judge from 1978 - 1983. Before that, she worked as a judge of the Orange County Harbor Municipal Court from 1976 - 1978. She was in private practice with her husband from 1973 -1976. She was the first full time female Orange County Deputy District Attorney and served as a deputy district attorney in that office from 1967 - 1973. She was a graduate of U.S.C. Law School as well as undergraduate of U.S.C. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta.

She was Chief Judge of the Central District of California from 2005 to 2009, and served on many national committees of the United States Judicial Conference and Committees of the 9th Circuit. She served as Chair of the United States Judicial Conference's Standing Committee on Rules of Practice and Procedure for the federal courts for 5 years which oversaw the work of the 5 committees on Criminal, Civil, Evidence, Bankruptcy, and Appellate Rules.

She was the recipient of one of Orange County's highest honors, the Franklin G. West Award, in 1984. The Orange County Federal Bar Association established the "Alicemarie H. Stotler Award" in her honor to be given annually to a deserving recipient.

Alicemarie was an avid runner, having completed 10 full and many half marathons. "SAM" ("Sweet Alicemarie"), so dubbed in 1976 by a colleague, was truly a great lady, one for the ages. She set a standard for women in law that inspired the legions that followed. One can safely say she was an inspiration to all who knew her. A remarkable woman, lawyer and judge. Everyone she touched grew. You will be greatly missed SAM. Well done, well done. May God bless and receive you.

We want to thank all the nurses, doctors, and private caregivers who had a part in Alicemarie's life. A memorial celebration of life will be held in due course at a time and place to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, if you wish to make a contribution in her memory, please consider a contribution to the Alicemarie Huber Stotler Scholarship Fund at the U.S.C. Gould School of Law or your favorite charity for cancer research.

Final arrangements by the Neptune Society will be private at her request.
