Peter Herman Obituary

Herman, Peter Prine 53 April 15, 1958 Aug. 25, 2011 Born in Texas, Peter spent his early years in Connecticut and New Jersey, and moved to Oregon with his family in 1968. After graduating from Beaverton High School he went to Cornell University, then spent six years in New Orleans, working as a cook and playing jazz piano. Peter returned to Oregon in 1984, where he lived until he left us suddenly and unexpectedly from complications related to hypertension. Peter earned an MS in Molecular Biology at the University of Oregon and a Ph.D. in Physical Organic Chemistry at PSU. He loved talking with people about anything scientific and especially enjoyed helping children explore the scientific world through volunteer work at OMSI and the Mad Science program. He worked as a Senior Research Assistant in OHSU's Cancer Retrovirus Lab and later at Cache Molecular Group helping customers learn to use molecular modeling software. He recently had begun pursuing the field of nutrition as a profession, combining his love of cooking healthy and delicious food, his passion for teaching and his chemistry background. Peter was one of those individuals who never took anything for granted. Each day was new and beautiful. Everyone he met was interesting, and he loved exchanging ideas with them. He often described himself as "a 5-year-old in a grown-up's body" because he felt the world was full of wonderful things to be explored and appreciated. Peter loved nature and being outdoors. He was an avid cyclist and an expert on- and off-trail backpacker. He would spend hours studying topo maps, preparing for his annual North Cascades trek. He particularly loved Mt. Hood, and knew its crevasses and outcroppings intimately. Being creative and artistic, Peter expressed his feelings through original music (in New Orleans he played informally with Bobby McFerrin and Professor Longhair), and via his published and prize-winning poetry. He'd return from hikes with breathtaking photos of fog, alpine lakes, fields of wildflowers, or snow-covered jagged mountain peaks, and with renewed enthusiasm for sharing his experiences. Family was a mainstay for Peter. Get-togethers would include lively conversations about almost anything, lots of laughter, singing, croquet and card games, food, stories and much affection. His life and presence were both an education and a special treat to his family and to all who knew and loved him. Peter is survived by his parents, Paul and Polly; sisters, Anne (partner Deb) and Louisa of Portland; brother, Jed (wife Laura) and adored niece, Lily of Stevens Point, Wis. Peter believed that we're all part of the "cosmic soup," and that his life energy would go back into the mix of the universe. We miss him terribly, but take comfort in thinking that he now enjoys being a part of the natural world, as the streaks of orange and purple in a beautiful sunset and as the fresh snow on Mt. Hood. We also know that Peter continues to bring life and hope to others, through the Organ Donor and Lions Eye programs. Love and good energy to you, Peter! A celebration of Peter's life will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011, with a remembrance service at 3 p.m., at the Mittleman Jewish Community Center, 6651 S.W. Capitol Highway, Portland, OR 97219; 503-244-0111. Please come and share your memories of Peter with his friends and family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to The Oregon Food Bank, or to any charity of your choice. Please share your memories and photos of Peter on Facebook "In Memory of Peter Herman."

Today (in 2024) I was reading an article about eukaryotic cells, and I immediately thought of Peter. I worked with him around 1999, and still remember him excitely explaining the intracies of cellular mechanics to me. I decided to find this page, and just wanted to leave a message that 13 years later, an old friend fondly remembers you.

I met Peter in the late 1980's while working at the Portland VA in research. I was captivated by his stories and pictures of sipping coffee while watching the sun come up over the North Cascades. We had plans to hike Yocum Ridge together but I had to cancel due to an injury. Peter told me to heal myself and that we pursue that adventure another day. We lost contact as I moved away. I learned of Peter's passing while trying to look him up. Yocum Ridge has remained on my mind all these years. Good-bye my friend. Your kindness, spirit and energy will never be forgotten.

Just came across Peter's plaque on a bench along Fanno Creek Trail. Curious, I looked up his obit, and was really moved at the depth and breadth of our collective loss. Thanks to whoever arranged for this bench dedication - it keeps him alive, even to complete strangers, and honors his life in a way few other things could.

I JUST found out that Peter had passed away, when I was registering for the BHS 40th class reunion. I have very fond memories of Peter... my family even invited Peter and 6 other junior high friends to our beach cabin for a long weekend of tag sand football, BBQ's, and of course poker, one of the guys favorite activities. :) Dang, life is so fleeting... this is such a sad occurance. I will always remember you, my friend.

Sadly, I did not know Peter well; we lived a few streets apart throughout school years and had mutual friends. There is a bench for him in Garden Home. It's on the east end of the THPRD trail aka "Old Bridle Trail" that runs from Vista Brook Park to the Garden Home Rec Center.

We've known the Hermans since Ann and I moved in across the street from them in 1993. Over the past few years I got to know Peter very well, and deeply appreciated the friendship we were developing. Frequent, impromptu conversations with him were always interesting, and occasional hikes together were splendid. His untimely departure leaves a large void, but the universe is still a better place for his energy and enthusiasm...

This is such a beautiful tribute to Peter, but of course words on paper can only do their best in describing a most magical and charismatic human being like Peter. There was truly only one like him! I miss his sweet gentle spirit and his way of looking at the world and singing harmony with him through the streets of Portland. May you be at peace Peter!

I was in the band with Peter at Beaverton H.S., he played trumpet. He was my best friend on our band trip to Europe when we were 15. He was the smartest kid in school.

My family moved to Illinois before my senior year, and I lost track of Peter...BUT about 8 years ago I was having a beer between flights in Salt Lake and started talking to a guy next to me. In one of the biggest coincidences in my life it turned out to be Peter, who I had not seen in 30 years.

He was a quiet genius and fantastic person.

Dearest Paul and Polly,
We have only now heard the sad news of Peter's death. What a terrible loss to you

I didn't know Peter well but lived on the same street as him growing up. As adults I ran into him later and at this time he was a molecular scientist and we discussed his work. I was an avid bicycle rider at the time and so was he and we planned to go for a ride together. But as things go, we never got together. I am very sorry to hear that this world has lost a great person. Wade Belknap

I did not know Peter, but how I wish I had known him! Simply reading his obituary was a gift. I add my appreciation to the "cosmic soup," along with my condolences to his family.

Having known Peter since our days at the University of Oregon, I think this obituary really does capture the essence of Peter as I remember him. It's been almost a month since his father, Paul, called and broke to news to me, and almost every day I have some new remembrance about Peter. We shared so many amazing and significant experiences together (graduate school, backpacking, weddings). Peter was a bright, brilliant light with an infectious since of wonder and appreciation of the world around him. My condolences to his family and friends. Peter will be missed by many, but forgotten by few.

I remember Pete as an outstanding trumpet player, whom I could never challenge or beat in band. After graduation in 1976, never ran into him again, but remember all the years playing togeather. It is sad to see classmates pass, and pray for his family and friends.

Polly and Paul - we are shocked and saddened to read about Peter. We are not in Portland but did read the Oregonian this morning. We will always remember Peter as a happy kid and so fun at the 4th of July celebrations at your house. Our hearts and thoughts are with you at this so difficult time.
