Edward James Callan M.D.

CALLAN, EDWARD JAMES, MD, age 56, passed away unexpectedly on January 9, 2013 at his home in Mill Valley, CA. Born in Dallas, TX in April 1956, he lived in Cincinnati, OH from 1958 to 1963, and was raised in Orlando, FL area from 1963 to 1974. He was educated at Saint Mary Magdalen Catholic School (1970) in Altamonte Springs, FL, and Lyman High School (1974) in Longwood, FL. He played football and baseball at Lyman. He attended Tulane University on an academic scholarship and graduated, cum laude, in 1978. He graduated from the University Of Florida College Of Medicine in 1982, and interned in Jacksonville. His residency brought him to the Bay Area of California in 1985. Settling in Northern California, he was an Ear Nose and Throat Surgeon, practicing in Richmond, CA these past several years. Ed was a gifted and dedicated surgeon. He was known and respected for his intelligence and work ethic. He displayed a respectful and easy manner to his patients and colleagues. Ed was a well-rounded individual who excelled and was interested in academics, athletics, and the arts. He enjoyed all outdoors activities and travel. His presence was always appreciated as he brought a levity and spontaneity to all moments. We will greatly miss his humor, thoughtful notes and letters, and inquisitive mind. Ed and his wife met at Tulane. He was a loving husband. Together, they enjoyed hiking , golf, snow skiing, and the arts. The pair traveled the world together visiting family and friends and enjoying places of interest. Ed was a generous and caring son, brother, uncle, nephew and cousin. He taught and imbued in his nieces and nephews a love of the outdoors, snow skiing and sports in general. He was an inspiration to his family and friends. Ed was predeceased by his father Francis P. Callan. He is survived by his loving wife AnneMarie, his mother Valerie and mother in law Patricia, his sisters, Ann, Monica, Lori and Meg, and his brothers Jim (Walle), Dan (Julie) and Tom (Alison), his sisters-in-law, Joyce DiPietro(Ed),
Arlene Haughton(Bob) and
Lorraine Gallagher (Tom) and brother-in-law Bob Heideck
(Virginia). Ed was a caring, thoughtful and fun loving uncle to his many nieces and nephews
Delaney Callan, Claire Callan, Paige Callan and Matthew Callan, Zack (Amanda) Gallagher and Zoe Gallagher, Michelle (Ken)Jaworyski, Denise (Bob) Simons and Genean (Tom) Wallace, Jennifer (Rob) Steiger and Elizabeth (Brendan) McCluskey, and Alexis Heideck and Karl Heideck. They will treasure their memories with him. Ed also leaves a family of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends in Texas, Florida, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and in California. His passing was sudden and unexpected; and his life was short lived. Yet, we are ever thankful for the time we had with him, and will treasure our memories with this gifted, caring and fun person. A Memorial and Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at 1 PM at Saint Mary Magdalen Catholic Church. A reception will follow at his mother's home.
