Evelyn A. "Sis" Sebree

Sebree, Evelyn A. "Sis" the great granddaughter of Umatilla's founder, Nathan Trowell, died on Wednesday, June 26. She was 83. Sis was born November 12, 1929 in Umatilla and lived there all her life, mostly in her beloved ancestral home, which was built in 1904 by her grandfather on land homesteaded by her great grandfather in the 1850's. She graduated from Umatilla High School, attended Florida State University for two years and then graduated with her Bachelor's degree from The University of Florida. She then taught at Lake City High School. After marriage, she taught at Skeen Elementary and pursued her Master's degree from Rollins College. She was employed at Lake-Sumter Junior College as an instructor and later became its Director of Financial Aid and for a time the Executive Director of the College Foundation. She earned her PhD from Florida State University. Sis served 25 years at the community college before retiring. Sis was instrumental in securing a new building for the nursing program at Lake-Sumter, was on the committee to save the Umatilla Methodist Church and place it on the National Register of Historic Places, was instrumental in making the Umatilla 1910 school into a museum and also served on the Carr Cabin restoration committee. She was president of the Florida Association of Financial Aid Administrators and was active in regional and national financial aid groups. She was appointed to the Board of Trustees at Lake-Sumter after retirement. She was a proud member of the Gator Nation and became a member of the Gator Boosters in 1951, Lake County Gator Club and the Mt. Dora Yacht Club. Sis will be remembered for her wit, intelligence, deep love for her family, her hometown and the game of bridge. Sis is survived by her children, Roger, Wyatt (Sheri), Cathie Tarby (Peter), Twink Krug (Jeff). She was predeceased by her son, Bill. Nin will be missed by her grandchildren, Michael (Tabitha), Christopher (Sarah), Allen Barto, Ashley Morton (Josh), Lance Krug, Lanie Krug and her five great-grandchildren. Her life will be celebrated at the First Baptist Church of Umatilla at 11:00 a.m., Saturday with Reverend Brooks Braswell officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dr. Evelyn Sebree Family Memorial Scholarship at Lake-Sumter State College. Online condolences may be made at www.beyersfuneralhome.com.
