Helen Heyl Mason, 97, long term resident of Winter Park, died on March 8, 2012. Born on June 26, 1914, in Kalamazoo, MI, she was the daughter of Frederick William Heyl and Elsie Louise Hinckley of Kalamzoo, MI, and Orlando. She graduated from the University of Michigan
in 1936 after spending a year in Paris studying French at the Sorbonne, then received an MA in French from Columbia University in 1937. In 1937 she married Colbourne Oscar Mason and the family lived in Connecticut until Colbourne's untimely passing in 1952 after which the family moved to Winter Park. She is survived by her four children, Barbara Mason, of Port Angeles, WA, Kenneth Mason of Winter Park, Glenn Mason of Silver Spring, MD, and Douglas Mason of Olympia, WA, and by eight grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren. Her sister Dorothy Hinckley Heyl of Orlando and Kalamazoo passed away in 1989. For many years she ran the exporting company founded by Colbourne, and pursued her other interests in French Culture with the Alliance Francaise in Winter Park as well as gardening, and golfing. In April 2012 she was interred at the family plot in Palm Cemetery in Winter Park.
