Funeral services for Rev. Hubert Floyd, 85, of Cordele will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 20, 2013 at Cordele First United Methodist Church. The committal service will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends prior to the service Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the church. Rev. Floyd passed away Thursday at his residence. He was a native of Conway, SC and was the son of the late William Harvey and Flora Belle Richardson Floyd. He was a graduate of Wofford College, Candler School of Theology, Emory University of Atlanta and did his graduate studies at the University of Havana and Northwestern University
, Evanston, IL. While serving on the Emory University missionary project in Cuba, he met Barbara Stewart, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Carl D. Stewart who were missionaries. They were married after Barbara's graduation from Asbury College. The Rev. Floyd served churches in South Carolina, Florida, Cuba, Costa Rica, and the Bahamas. In 1955, he and Barbara were consecrated as missionaries and sent to the Isle of Pines, Cuba. He served as pastor of Nueva Gerona Church, supervised twelve congregations and was the Chaplain of Cuba's National Prison in Nueva Gerona. He ministered to the political and the criminal prisoners during the Cuban Revolution. In 1961 the Board of Missions of the United Methodist Church sent the Floyds to Costa Rica where he was Pastor, District Superintendent, Administrator of the Youth Camp and Professor in the seminary. They returned to the United States in 1971. The Rev. Mr. Floyd has been the pastor of Coral Way United Methodist Church, Miami, FL Epworth United Methodist Church, Hollywood, FL and in 1980 was appointed Associate Council Director of the Florida Annual Conference and included the work as Coordinator and Supervisor of the Haitan and Hispanic Ministries. He also served as a member of the Governor's Advisory Committee on Refugee Concerns in Tallahassee. Rev.Floyd was the pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church, Lighthouse Point, FL and Grace United Methodist Church in Merritt Island, FL prior to his appointment to Asbury United Methodist Church in Maitland, FL. Upon his retirement he served as interim minister for Ebenezer Methodist Church in Nassau, Bahamas. Rev. Floyd is survived by his wife of 63 years, Barbara Floyd of Cordele, GA; four children and their spouses, Kenneth Floyd, a pharmacist, and his wife, Cristina of Orlando, FL, Kathryn Adams, a retired Spanish language high school teacher
and her husband, Russell of Cordele, GA, Vincent Carl Floyd, a Senior-Master Technician with Mazda and his wife, Mary of Savannah, GA and Miriam Skeim, a kindergarten Spanish teacher and her husband, Jeffrey of Dunedin, FL; 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a twin brother, Rev. Herbert Carl Floyd and his wife, Oneida of Spartanberg, SC and a sister, Margaret Thomas of Atlanta, GA.
