James Gulledge Stokes

Stokes, James Gulledge "" passed away on May 16, 2013. He is predeceased by his childhood sweetheart and wife of sixty four years, Rosemary Howell Stokes and his parents William Clyde Stokes and Clara Byrd Stokes. He is survived by his children, Sunny Stokes McCoy, Mary Rose Stokes and William James Stokes, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. James Stokes was born March 23, 1926 in Durant, Mississippi in Holmes County. He was the valedictorian of his high school class. He attended Millsaps College and went on to study Civil Engineering at the University of South Carolina through the Naval V 12 Program for officer's training. He received his Masters in Civil Engineering at Georgia Tech. Jim and Rosemary transferred to Orlando in 1954 with the Portland Cement Association. It was then that he met his dear friend and business partner, Jerry Gay and together they built a successful general contracting business. Jim served on the City of Orlando Zoning and Planning Board, was a member of the Orlando Rotary Club for over 50 years and attended the First United Methodist Church of Orlando. His great hobby was tennis. He especially loved the Saturday morning games at Clarence Varner's clay court in College Park. His family will miss his sense of humor, charming stories, devotion to God, and his exceptional homemade biscuits. A memorial service and reception to follow will be held on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Orlando.
