MARILYN HERBERT Obituary

HERBERT, MARILYN MAHAFFEY GRIMM "" a native Floridian, passed away peacefully at her residence on June 27, 2013. She was 69. Born November 19, 1943, Mrs. Herbert was raised in Apopka, Florida, and thrived on a lifelong love of learning, traveling and gardening. Although she left college to get married in 1963 to William A. Grimm, she later returned to school and trained to become a surgical technician after dedicating numerous years to raising her family and volunteering in the community. She continued her education and received a B.S. in social science from the University of Central Florida and later attained a Master's Degree from Boston University. She also attended management classes at Harvard University. After working as a social worker in Orlando, Mrs. Herbert entered the travel industry. Marilyn toured the world, exploring nearly every European country and Caribbean island and visited such far flung places as Hong Kong, Mali and Egypt. She never tired of learning about new places and meeting new people. An avid animal lover, Mrs. Herbert trained therapy dogs and brought them to local nursing homes to cheer up the elderly residents. She married the late George Arthur Herbert in 2003 and together they built a house in Edgewater, Florida, where they enjoyed boating on the Inter-coastal and spending time visiting with family. She was a beloved wife and mother who will be greatly missed. Survivors include two daughters, Kelley Swain of Jacksonville, Florida, and Kristen Grimm of Washington, DC; her grandchildren, Sarah and Ethan Swain; and her brother and sisters, Tom Mahaffey of Apopka, Florida, Eileen Steinberg of Palm Coast, Florida, and Jeanne Mahaffey of Jacksonville, Florida. A celebration of Marilyn's life will be at a later date in the fall. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be sent in honor of Marilyn Mahaffey Herbert to the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org) or the Humane Society of the United States (humanesociety.org).
