Dmitriy Nikitin Obituary

NIKITIN, M.D, DMITRIY A., a multi-organ abdominal transplant surgeon at Florida Hospital Transplant Center, died tragically on May 26. He was 41. Born in Russia on October 15, 1969, he received his Medical Degree from the Omsk Medical Institute, Omsk, Russia in 1993. He completed a residency in Anesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine there in 1994 and was a staff anesthesiologist at Omsk Regional Hospital until he immigrated to the United States in 1996. From 1996 until May 2001, he served as the Senior Manufacturing Scientist at Hemagen Diagnostics Inc. in Waltham, MA. He then completed a General Surgery Residency at the Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA in June of 2006. Subsequently he completed a Transplant Surgery Fellowship at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, TX in June of 2008. He then joined the Florida Hospital Transplant Center in Orlando, FL, where he performed 168 transplant surgeries. Dr. Nikitin was Board Certified in General Surgery with expertise in multi-organ abdominal transplantation, hepatobiliary surgery and minimally invasive surgical techniques. He was a member of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, the International Liver Transplant Society and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Nikitin devoted his career to saving the lives of countless transplant patients, and it is with deep sadness that his family, friends, colleagues and patients mourn this tragic loss. Robert A. Metzger, MD, Chair of the Department of Transplantation at Florida Hospital, says that he and Dr. Nikitin's colleagues will not only miss this gifted surgeon, but will miss the caring man who worked tirelessly by their sides. "He was a very passionate and meticulous surgeon who had an inquisitive mind and a zealous pursuit of excellence. Our transplant team is stunned and grieving," Dr. Metzger said. As a researcher, Dr. Nikitin conducted clinical trials and authored numerous articles and book chapters. In 2007 he was awarded the Young Investigator Award by the International Liver Transplant Society. "Dmitriy was such a pleasure to work with," says Leigh Ann Burgess, director of the Florida Hospital Transplant Center. "He was a true professional and treated his patients and coworkers as equals. We will keep with us the memory of him walking down the hallway carrying an apple in his hand and an ever-present smile on his face." Dr. Nikitin was a very proud husband and father and spoke often of his children to the transplant staff during his long hours in the operating room. He is survived by his wife, Lyubov, a daughter, Mariya (17), and three sons, Dmitriy (13), Andrey (6) and Maxim (3). Their extended family lives outside of the United States, and Florida Hospital has created a fund to help Dr. Nikitin's wife and children. Those interested in contributing can visit any Bank of America branch and donate to the Nikitin Family Account. A memorial service for Dr. Nikitin will be held at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, June 1 at the Florida Hospital Seventh-Day Adventist Church, located at 2800 N. Orange Avenue, Orlando, FL 32804.

It was always a pleasure to work along side Dr. Nikitin. I was able to see him during transplants and during organ recoveries and regardless of how exhausted he might be or how much work still lie ahead of him, he always wore that famously boyish smile on his face and spoke in a warm and friendly tone. He was a quiet man who conveyed a beautiful spirit by his dedication and tremendous care. He was a wonderful part of a surgical team that treated each other like family, and yet he held a special and private place for the family he loved so deeply and worked so hard for. He was modest and humble and his desires were for his family and his patients, always putting himself behind them as many surgeons do. I hope that all of the dreams and hopes he had for all of them can be fulfilled in his absence. A man as good as he deserves that much and more. He made an indelible impression on everyone who knew and worked with him; we are fortunate to have our memories of him.

We, at Hahnemann University, are so saddened by the loss of your husband and father. Dmitriy was always well respected by all the nurses and staff, mainly because he showed us respect and kindness throughout his years here. We will always remember him for that and the undeniable skill he possessed as a physician. You and your family will remain in our prayers so that you may find peace and understanding as to why such an unthinkable tragedy has occurred.

I met Dmitry when I was a 3rd year medical student at Drexel, and he was a 3rd year surgery resident. He was always pleasant, always humble, always respectful, and always smiling. What a terrible tragedy to lose a man such as this. My heart goes out to his wife and children as well as to the family he left behind at the hospital, where it is clear he had already made his mark as a talented and caring transplant surgeon. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

I am so saddened by the tragic events that have taken such a gifted physician, surgeon, and family man from this world. Dmitriy, as he asked me to call him, was a kind, caring, and gentle man. He was a hero to his family, patients, and to the staff of the transplant center. He often woke me from a deep sleep, when I was on call for transplants, with a melodious voice saying, "Steve, we have a donor for you to work on." After several minutes giving me the details of who, what, when, and where with me in my half awake state, he would, in a soft voice say, "OK, any questions? Then goodnight, bye bye." I had the privilege of working with Dmitriy from day one of his employment at Florida Hospital, and will never forget him. He was such a dedicated man, and I will take a lesson from the way he lived his life. My prayers are with his wife, and 4 children. We are with you in your grief. There will never be another Dmitriy, but we will always, always remember the friendship we had with him in our memories. By the way, he was a fantastic volleyball player. God bless his wife, children, family, and extended work family. I was honored to be at his memorial today.

Although I only met Dr. Nikitin once – on the day of my father’s successful liver transplant 7 weeks ago, he struck me as being a very gentle and talented individual; someone who had a very special talent, one that gave renewed life to not only my father but many, many other individuals. He made a significant difference in the world! My sympathies and thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues he has left behind.

Dr Nikitin was the surgeon for my husband's liver transplant 7 weeks ago. The morning of surgery, Dr Nikitin came in, all smiles, and asked if he was ready. He was so positive and upbeat that I knew my husband was in excellent hands. After the long surgery, he came to the waiting room, all smiles again, and patiently answered all my questions. Some hours passed after surgery and we were finally allowed to go to my husband's room in ICU to see him. We were all in and out over a period of about 2 hours. Just before we departed, we were surprised to see Dr Nikitin, all smiles, returning to check on my husband. He was so genuinely pleased that my husband did well in surgery. I had the feeling that no matter how many surgeries he did, he would always be pleased and happy. Thank you Dr Nikitin for taking such good care of my husband.

His death is a great loss to all. Our deepest sympathies to his family.

"This is my Father's world. O let me ne'er forget
That though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet."

I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Nikitin on many liver transplants. One fond memory is whenever he called he always would say...Helllooo Kathleen, this is Dmitriy, Dr. Nikitin, transplant surgeon. This man was to be admired, though he would never expect this. He was such a humble man, a role model, not just for colleagues but for all people. He spent countless hours helping the sick and less fortunate. His smile could warm a room quickly. I often remember how Melissa and I would banter back and forth just to make him smile and give a chuckle. Mrs. Nikitin and children, I can not imagine your pain at this time. Know that thousands of people are praying for you. I am sure the Good Lord told him when they met, the seven words we all long to hear when we meet him, "well done my good and faithful servant." May the Lord Bless You and keep You, may he make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you and until you meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.
With much Love and respect,

The dream team - Florida Hospital Transplant Surgeons

I worked with Dr. Nikitin almost every day as I am one of his Nurse Practitioners at the transplant center. He was always willing to help anybody, you could count on him to be there to see patients anytime and always answered your calls and questions. Compassionate, dependable, professional, knowledgable, advocate, and so, so talented - those are a few words to describe him. His determination and perfectionism was sometimes frustrating to work with but everything was for the patient and I respect that and have learned so much from him. I love working with all my surgeons and will deeply miss Dmitriy as one of them.

Our condolences to the Nikitin family. We had the pleasure to meet Dr. Nikitin and have him assist in my transplant surgery. He was truly a wonderfully kind man and gifted surgeon. We were so saddened by his death. May God be with his family, friends and the transplant team at the hospital during this most tragic time and unnecessary loss. Jim and JoAnn Halleran

The evening after Dr. Nikitin and the other incredible doctors at FHTC did transplant surgeries for my brother and me, Dr. Nikitin was on call. He spoke so highly of his wife, his children, and of his excitement at the success of some new medical procedures.

The world is a much, much better place for the contributions of Dmitriy Nikitin. I am so sad for his wife, for his children, for his coworkers, and patients. I will always appreciate his contribution in my family's life.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your dear family. There is no other words to express how truly sorry I am that this happened to this amazing person.
To you Dr. Nikitin:"I will never forget how genuine you always were, and the good pointers you gave me in regards to doing a good job and enjoying family as much as possible". To his dear family: "I don't know the kind of pain you are going through right now.He was family to all the Florida Hospital staff. He was very respected and loved by everyone that got the pleasure to meet him. He always spoke very dearly of all of you. You were his world".
