Barbara Cheney Obituary

CHENEY, BARBARA
RANDOLPH, daughter of Donald A. and Fanny R. Cheney, well-known Orlando citizens and native Orlandoans, and granddaughter of John M. Cheney and Benjamin
McCain Robinson, both prominent pioneers in Orange County, died May 20, 2011, of a brain tumor. She was 88. Barbara Cheney was born in Orlando on August 31, 1922 and lived her entire life in Orlando, graduating from the old Orlando High School and from Rollins College in Winter Park. She worked at the Orlando Air Force Base, then at the Navy Base for about 40 years as a civil service employee. Her memberships included life-long membership in the Park Lake Presbyterian Church. She had been a member of the Junior League and following in the footsteps of her mother, grandmothers, and numerous aunts, became a member of the Orlando Rosalind Club. She was also a member of the Historical Society of Central Florida and the Colonial Dames of America. She is survived by her sister,
Virginia White of Frederick, MD; a niece, Lisa White; two nephews, R. Peter White and Andrew C. White, all of the Washington, D.C. area. A memorial service will be held at the Park Lake Presbyterian Church on Thursday, May 26, 2011 at 2 o'clock, followed by a reception at the church. Interment will be private that morning at the Cheney family plot in Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Barbara's name to the music department of Park Lake Presbyterian, D.A. Cheney Scholarship (Athletic Department) Rollins College, or Central Florida Council of The Boy Scouts of America.

We are saddened to learn of Barbara's passing. We were friends with Barbara while members of Park Lake and afterward. We have been in Rochester, NY for 30 years and just the last four or five years had lost touch with Barbara. I recall my meeting her the first time after attending a concert at Carr Auditorium. Barbara had invited several of us, including Gene and Paul Perry and some others, to her parents' and her home afterward.
Barbara was always very kind to us and our family. I remember her knitting a pair of booties and outfit for our first born, Kevin, back in 1974. She was always thinking of others.
Please accept our sincere sympathy, Bob and Carolyn Towers.
