Ethelda B. "Teddy" Ables

Notice Condolences

ABLES, ETHELDA B. "TEDDY", January 26, 1923 - March 18, 2013. Third child of eight children born to Adger DeWitt Bowen and Ethel
Eubanks Bowen in Oakway, South Carolina, during a blizzard which prevented the doctor from arriving at the Bowen farmhouse in time to assist with her birth. Grew up on the family farm in the foothills of the Blue Ridge with her three brothers, Dewey, Lamar and Hulan and three sisters, Frances, Wyona and Patricia, all of whom predeceased her. (The first child, a boy, died at birth.) Attended and graduated at age 16 from Oakway, South Carolina schools where her mother was a teacher and her father a school board trustee. Attended Winthrop College (nka Winthrop University) for three semesters before eloping with Clifford M. Ables, Jr. (aka "Kip"), of Seneca, South Carolina on March 15, 1942. Gave birth to Clifford M. Ables, III, on February 19, 1943, and Michael B. Ables, on May 22, 1945. Moved to Sanford, Florida with husband and Clifford M. Ables, III in 1944, where she resided to date of death. An amazing woman who tenderly cared for her husband, who had a chronic disease, diabetes mellitus (Type I diabetes) from childhood, and who predeceased her in a tragic auto accident in October 1983, in which she was also injured, but recovered sufficiently to live almost 40 years before lung cancer got the best of her shortly after her 90th birthday. Teddy, the nickname given to her by her college roommate, was an amazing woman who was successful in occupations for which she had no training or experience, from selling ladies clothing at the Hollywood Shops in downtown Sanford to serving as the guidance department's secretary at two different middle schools (the second at the invitation of the principal who chose his staff for a brand new school). She was amazing because she never stopped learning, from college to Toastmasters to typing to computers to crossword puzzles in the daily newspaper which she read "cover to cover". She encouraged and supported her son's activities wholeheartedly, from Vacation Bible School to Cub Scouts to PTA during their childhood and youth, and instilled in them a love of learning and the desire to always do their best. Teddy was a Proverbs 31 wife and mother as a living example of the love of Jesus Christ. With her husband and sons she was a charter member of Pinecrest Baptist Church in Sanford. She was amazing because in 2003 at the age of 80, she contracted non-Hodgkin's lymphoma cancer, quit smoking "cold-turkey" and successfully completed six months of chemotherapy, including a bout with pneumonia. Up to that time, she fully maintained her lawn and flower beds, cleaned the valleys on her roof and the gutters of her home. Now she rejoices with her husband, parents, brothers and sisters in the presence of the Lord and we who are left behind,
Clifford M. Ables, III and wife, Elaine, Michael B. Ables and wife, Judith, grandchildren, Clifton,
Jason and wife, Yonca, Jennifer, Jeremy and wife, Andrea, great-grandchildren, Joey, Kaley, Juliana, Kaya, Kaia and Micah, grieve, but not as the world grieves, because our faith is in Jesus Christ, as was Teddy's, and we will be together again on resurrection day (I Thessalonians 4:13-18). Visitation will be Saturday, March 23 from 1:30-2:30PM with service to follow at 2:30PM at First Baptist Church, Sanford. Interment at Oaklawn Cemetery.
