JAMES LAWRENCE Obituary

LAWRENCE, D.V.M., JAMES CAMERON, Died at home on May 12, 2011, in the arms of his loving wife, Peggy. He was born April 14, 1931 in Birmingham, Alabama, to George Benjamin and Edna Lee Windham Lawrence. He grew up in Montgomery and Mobile, Alabama, graduating from Murphy High School in Mobile and immediately joined the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. Cameron graduated in 1958 from the School of Veterinary Medicine at Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University), where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. It is there where he met his college sweetheart, Peggy Smith, and they have been married for 55 years. They came to Sanford, Florida, in 1958 and opened Lawrence Veterinary Hospital in 1960. That same year he became veterinarian at Sanford Orlando Kennel Club and was there for 50 years. Cameron was always an athlete, having been on the Marine Corps boxing team, the Auburn wrestling and tennis teams. He continued to be an avid runner and tennis player for years and also competed and placed in track in the Golden Age Games. At the old City of Sanford Zoo, Dr. Lawrence donated his services over the years treating the large variety of birds and animals. At home his hobbies included raising tropical fish, wild waterfowl, and exotic animals and birds. In addition to his wife, Peggy, he is survived by son, Jim Lawrence of Sanford; daughters, Cathy Jones of Sanford, Janie (Dave) Marshall of Sanford, and Beth (Vince) Corino of Lake Mary; grandchildren are Cozart (Genny) Lawrence of Lake Mary, Vickie Jones of Sanford, and John Jones of Sanford; great franddaughter is Mya Peets of Pembroke, Bermuda. Visitation will be held at Gramkow Funeral Home 500 East Airport Blvd, Sanford, on Wednesday, May 18th from 6pm.-8pm. A service of celebration will be held at 10am on Thursday, May 19th at St. Peter's Episcopal Church 700 Rinehart Rd, Lake Mary. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to SPCA of Central Florida, 2800 County Home Road, Sanford, Florida 32772 or a charity of your choice.
