Myrtle Alexander Notice
Alexander, Myrtle - age 96; passed away peacefully on February 23, 2014 at the Hospice of the Comforter, Altamonte Springs, FL. Myrtle was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania on November 30, 1917; her parents were Herman Goldberg and Florence Romanoff Goldberg. The family moved to Miami, Florida where Myrtle graduated in 1934 from Miami Senior High School and attended the University of Miami. One night at a dance competition Myrtle met one of the judges, Jerry Alexander. They were married on November 1, 1936 and were happily together for 59 years until Jerry's passing in 1995. Jerry and his brother owned a number of retail shoe shops, and in 1952 Myrtle and Jerry moved to Orlando to manage the Orlando and Daytona Beach stores. They were a pioneering member of the early group of local merchants along North Orange Avenue. For many years Myrtle served as bookkeeper and accountant for their business, until they sold the stores in the 1970s. Neither was ready for retirement, however, and both accepted sales positions in the shoe department of Jacobson's Department Store in Longwood, positions they enjoyed filling for over 10 years. Myrtle and Jerry were one of the fifty Orlando-area families who in 1954 founded Temple Israel, the first Conservative synagogue in Central Florida. Myrtle was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Louise Morgan of Fort Payne, AL. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Mrs. Helene Alexander (Michael) Murphy of Orlando; grandchildren Greg Alan Fox of Altamonte Springs, FL, Todd Kenneth Fox (Ron Lambert) of Orlando, Mrs. Cindi Fox (William) Kemp of Cary, NC; and two great-grandchildren: Jared Alexander Fox and Robert Alan Fox of Altamonte Springs, FL. Myrtle is also survived by two nephews, Stephen Kline (Phyllis) of West Palm Beach, FL, and Steven Alexander of Miami, FL, and eight nieces: Mrs. Nancy (David) Dowler of Aurora, CO, Mrs. Suzanne (Thor) Ourada of Centennial, CO, Mrs. Sharon Kline (John) Weaver of Niceville, FL, Suzan Alexander of Seminole, FL, Sherry Lee Alexander, of New Orleans, LA, Mrs. Annette Alexander (Wally) Cardona of West Palm Beach, FL, Mrs. Harriet Alexander (Albert) Puchades of Griffin, GA, and Victoria Alexander of Encinitas, CA. Graveside services will be held at 12 noon on February, February 28, 2014 at Temple Israel Cemetery, 9200 Morton Jones Road, Gotha, FL 34374, Rabbi Joshua Neely presiding. Funeral arrangements handled by Baldwin Fairchild Funeral Home, Ivanhoe Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice of the Comforter, 480 W. Central Pkwy., Altamonte Springs, FL.
