Carolyn Moore Notice
MOORE, CAROLYN, born April, 9, 1949 in Bluefield, West Virginia. She grew up in Winter Park, lived in New Smyrna Beach since 1971 and passed away on Thursday, March 8, 2012 at her residence. A memorial service and reception will be held at Coronado Community United Methodist Church, New Smyrna Beach, on Tuesday, March 13, at 1 p.m. Carolyn graduated from Winter Park High School in 1967; she received a Bachelor's in Special Education from University of Florida in 1971, continuing her education to earn a Master's Degree in Specific Learning Disabilities from Stetson University in 1980 and an Education Specialist Degree in Administration in 1988. She worked for 14 years as a teacher and 15 years as a District Administrator in Volusia County Schools, before retiring in 2000. Striving to demonstrate her philosophy of recognizing and assisting in the development of the talents of all people, Carolyn served as a member of a number of professional and community organizations. For a few years, Carolyn owned and ran a business, Executive Gift Service, a reminder and gift service. She was also a member of Coronado Community United Methodist Church, Deborah Circle, Good News Singers Praise Choir, Phi Delta Kappa, Alpha Delta Kappa, Council on Exceptional Children [CEC], Division of Learning Disabilities, Council On Aging, Tomoka Gem and Mineral Society, Parrothead Club Community Service Coordinator, and State of Florida Cooperative Consultation trainer. One of her proudest accomplishments was as co-founder and facilitator of Hopeful Gathering, a faith-based cancer support group and (ACS) Team. As a cancer patient of 19 years, Carolyn has survived surgeries, 15 years of chemotherapy, bone marrow transplant; 4 different radiation series (including stereotactic brain radiation), and a variety of treatments and side effects. Honors include 1982 CEC Teacher of the Year, 1985 Master Teacher 'Who's Who in American Education" Selectee, 2000 Oceanside CEC Administrator of the Year, 2007 ACS Torchbearer, Winter Park High School Alumni 2007 "Make a Difference Award", and 2009 Southeast Volusia "Courage Award." Carolyn enjoyed reading, beading, traveling, cooking, dancing, and especially spending time with loved ones. She felt blessed to have a loving son, Scott, daughter-in-law, Jana, and grandchildren Skyler, Aniyah, and Josiah (New Smyrna Beach.) From Winter Park/Orlando area are: mother, Betty Cole: deceased father, Bill Cole; sister, Sue Cook and deceased husband, Steve; brother, Rob Cole, wife, Margaret, and family; brother, Mark Cole and wife, Amy, and family. Brother David Cole, wife, Julie, and family live in Pembroke Pines. When asked if she would like to change her life, Carolyn stated "I believe that God has given me the gift of life (living with cancer) so that I can give hope to others who have similar struggles. I credit the 3 F's (faith, family and friends) for helping me to travel this journey." Memorial donations may be made in Mrs. Moore's memory to the ; CorMeth Day School or Coronado Community United Methodist Church Scholarship Fund.
