Hillis Edward Bandy

Notice Condolences

Bandy, Hillis Edward passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Saturday, August 24, 2013, three weeks shy of his 85th birthday. Hillis was a longtime resident of Orlando, Florida. Hillis and his wife Betty enjoyed the summer months living in Scaly Mountain, North Carolina. He graduated from OHS and attended the University of Florida where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Hillis was actively involved in a number of leadership positions in the Orlando community over the years. He was President of Kiwanis Club of South Orlando, President of Touchdown Club of Orlando, President of Boone Boosters and President of Pi Kappa Alpha Alumni Association. He also served on the Zoning Board of Adjustments for the City of Orlando and was a Special Deputy for the Secretary of State and served on the Board of South Branch YMCA. In recent years, he was a member of Orlando Remembered and Orange County Ole Timers. In May 2013, he was inducted into the Boone Hall of Fame. Hillis was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Mae Bandy, and his sister Evelyn Gemeinhardt. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty Bumby Bandy, daughters Beth (John) Ames, Mary Anne (Dave) Clapp, Holly (Vic) Mason; grandchildren Brewer (Emily) Ames, Ashley Ames, Joseph Ames, Samuel Ames, Stetson Clapp, Mary Elizabeth Clapp, Price Clapp, William Clapp, Chad (Shelby) Mason, Ryan Mason, Elise Mason and great grandson Trace Mason. He is also survived by his siblings Bobby Bandy, Maynard (Madeline) Bandy and Sarah Jones and their families. A private family graveside service will be held on Friday, August 30, 2013 with a celebration of Hillis' life to follow for family and friends at 10:30 a.m. at Delaney Street Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, 1919 Delaney Avenue, Orlando, Florida. In lieu of flowers, the family graciously requests donations be made to Boone High School Hall of Fame, 3493 Emerywood Lane, Orlando, FL 32812 or Scaly Mountain Community Association, P.O. Box 92, Scaly Mountain, NC 28775.
