Peter St. Louis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 13 to Dec. 14, 2010.

ST. LOUIS, Peter Borden MBE, CD, RCAF L/Col, Wing Commander, Squadron Leader Thursday, December 9, 2010 at the age of 87. Survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Frances Garnett, his proud children, Margot (Martin Beckwith), Archie (Julia) and Paul (Lorna), predeceased by his cherished daughter, Brenda. Forever remembered by his grandchildren Michael, Henry, Matthew, Susan, Charles, Christian, Archie and Frances. Dear brother of John (Heather) and Charles "Chappie" (Libby), predeceased by brothers Louis "Paddy", Bruce, Archie and Paul. Son of the late Col. Archie R. St. Louis and Margaret Hodgson. Survived by many nieces, nephews and friends. Peter led an adventurous and full life following the example of his father who he admired greatly. He lived in Shanghai as a child, was schooled in England and joined the RCAF in 1941 at the age of 18. In 1951, Peter married Frances and also received the MBE medal following his daring rescue of a British scientific survey party in Antarctica in 1950. He remained with the RCAF thereafter becoming a Squadron Leader in Europe during the Cold War era. He retired from the RCAF as a Wing Commander (L/Col) in 1972. With more adventure in his first 50 years than most, he was quite happy to settle into a structured domestic life; working for the federal government, spending time with his family and playing a lot of golf. He was a devoted husband and cared for Frances as long as he possibly could. He was immensely proud of his children and grandchildren. Peter's love of sport began in his youth as a gifted athlete and he followed the athletic achievements of his children and grandchildren with great interest. His outward stoicism often belied his caring nature. Always quick with a joke, Peter's dry wit served him well until the very end. He left us all with his own fine example of how to live with dignity, humility and courage. The family is very grateful to the Heart Institute Drs. Haddad, Rubens, Dupuis and the other intensivists as well as the incredibly dedicated and caring nurses in the I.C.U. The family would also like to thank the staff at Colonel By Retirement Residence. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod St (at O'Connor) Wednesday, December 15 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel Thursday at 10:30 am. Reception to follow in the Reception Room of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod St. In lieu of flowers, donations to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation may be made in honour of Peter.

Dear Martin and Margot,

Brenda and I would like to offer you all our condolences.

Although we did not know your father, Margot, we discovered his well-filled life and many achievements in the major obituary (we had missed the first announcement).

With all our sympathy,

François and Brenda

"Mrs. Saint", Archie, Paul and family...I was very sorry to hear about "Mr. St. Louis" passing away. I have such fond memories of my visits to Beaver Ridge and with the "short-fall" of parenting I experienced at my place; it was sure enlightening and welcomed the TLC I was shown at your home. I wish you all my warm thoughts and tender blessings. David Lindsay

It is with great fondness that I remember Uncle Pete. As a child I remember him 'dropping' in for a visit wherever we lived throughout Canada - flight suit and all. He was an original and will be missed. Our thoughts are with you.
