Connie JOHNSTON

JOHNSTON, Connie (Freda Conroy)
September 20, 1940 - June 12, 2013
After a courageous battle with lung cancer, Connie's life came to an end on Wednesday, June 12. Predeceased by her parents, Irving and Gertrude Conroy, and her daughter, Arianne. Sadly missed by Kerry, husband of 48 years and companion in life's adventures, daughter Andrea Ngia, son-in-law Dale, grandsons Kyle and Dylan, brother Lanny and family. Connie will also be sorely missed by cherished friends in Ottawa, Montreal, New Zealand. Connie attended Fairmount and Baron Byng schools in Montreal and was a graduate of New Brunswick Teachers College and Sir George Williams University. Her abilities as a teacher were legendary and her time teaching in the schools of Montreal's Mile End, Point St Charles and St Henri districts in the sixties and seventies contributed significantly to the development of her students, their parents and their communities. In the eighties she continued to inspire students in the Western Quebec School Board and later became a consultant assisting and supporting teachers and advocating for the 'whole language' approach within the Ministry of Education Quebec. Connie's love of the arts flourished in Ottawa where she enjoyed the National Art Gallery, National Arts Centre and many other cultural centers. An important aspect of her life was reading and participating in book clubs. Her participation level, passion and intellect won her the admiration of fellow club members. Nana will be fondly remembered for her love of books, movies, gingerbread house making, comfort food baking, seashell collecting and hot dogs by the fireplace. A gathering of Connie's friends and family will be held at Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, Ottawa on Monday, June 24 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to MASC (Multicultural Arts for Schools and Communities www.masconline.ca) are welcome.
