William KNIGHT

KNIGHT, William Leroy
1921 - 2013
Bill passed away peacefully on February 25, 2013 with family by his side at Carlingview Manor in Ottawa. Bill and Doris (who predeceased him in 2005) were longtime residents of Cambridge, Ontario. They met at Humberside Collegiate in Toronto and were married in 1942. Two weeks later, Bill went overseas for three years with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He and Doris exchanged letters daily until their joyful reunion in 1945. Bill and Doris made their contribution to the Baby Boom shortly thereafter with the arrival of Jim (Elizabeth), Bob (Eileen) and Jo-Anne (John Judge). The Echo followed with the arrival of grandchildren Christopher, Matthew, April, Angela, Patrick and Joseph. Bill was a leader in the Cambridge business community, retiring as area manager for Canada Trust. He volunteered his time generously through the Rotary Club and Junior Achievement, and was a longtime supporter of the Cambridge Memorial Hospital, an institution which had much to do with his long life. He was an inveterate golfer who only rarely threw his clubs into the Grand River either at the Galt Country Club or at Doon Valley. He and Doris played a mean game of bridge and both participated in bridge clubs that spanned decades. Hockey Night in Canada was not a quiet time in Bill's household, especially if the Montreal Canadiens, who "got all the bounces", were playing the beloved Maple Leafs. His children thought it best to be out with friends on these occasions. Bill was an avid reader, a lover of opera and music generally although not enamoured of Green Day, an independent political thinker who supported the NDP to the bewilderment of his banker counterparts, and an intellectual who returned to university late in life, achieving his Bachelor's Degree at Wilfrid Laurier University in 1976, but mostly Bill was a devoted husband and father, grandfather and uncle to an extended family who will miss him dearly. Family thanks the staff of Queen's Terrace in Cambridge, Carlingview Manor in Ottawa and Veterans Affairs Canada for their care and support. In memory of Bill, donations may be made to the Cambridge Memorial Hospital Foundation at www.cmhfoundation.ca. A celebration of Bill's life will be held April 27, 1 - 4 p.m. at the Galt Country Club, 700 Coronation Blvd, Cambridge, Ontario.
