Prof Shelby was the best professor I had at McGill. I remained in touch with him for years after I left in 1978. He was generous with his advice, and was both a wise and caring human being

One of my best friends, is Professor Selby's son, The Rev. Robert (Rob) Selby. I feel like I knew Prof. Selby through his son Rob. Also very dedicated to his flock, very funny and tells great stories.

My sincere condolences to the family. I was an Electrical Engineering major ('78), but I took his Surveying class as an elective, along with a great bunch of Architecture students. He was a great teacher, and I always enjoyed his jokes, especially the "dumbie Architect" ones; they were always in good taste.

Professor Selby was my favorite teacher at McGill, the courses with him were so pleasant they were more recreation than courses. He has inspired me every day in my structural engineer career. I always tried to stick to what he was calling a dirty shirt engineer, just like he was, he certainly was my mentor. I still quote him very often while helping young engineers I train. I consider myself very lucky to have been in his classes, that man was really one of a kind.
Mr Selby I will cherish you forever.
And to the family, my sincere sympathies.

We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of your father. He was a great blessing to many people, using the many gifts that the Lord gave him.
We pray that the Lord will comfort you as you mourn his passing, but we rejoice that he is in heaven, praising God for His love and grace.

I found Professor Selby to be down to earth, kind, generous, and a great mentor. I believe he wanted his students to be good at engineering and be upstanding human beings. And he modeled the behaviour beautifully. Rest in Peace, Professor, and thanks for the great memories.

My sincerest condolences to the many generations of family and friends of Professor Selby.
Prof. Selby was well-known as a passionate, engaging & well-liked teacher.
Particularly notable were Surveying and Survey camp (in the rain, around the Residence Halls).
Thank you, Prof. Selby, for all you did.

Put those pencils and listen he would say. Professor Selby was one of the few professor that marked me in engineering school. He taught because he had a passion to teach. He taught surveying because he believed that it would enable us to find summer jobs. Always thinking of the students We all have very fond memories of him.
My heartfelt condolences

Dear Professor Selby and Family,
My sincere condolences...very sad to hear of the passing of Mr. Selby. Some teach because they have to - and have better things to do. Some teach and have a passion for their subject. Professor Selby has a passion for his subjects, has a flair for teaching, and moreover has a great concern for his students. 'Drop your pencils and listen!' We remember how well he treats us. He multiplies himself out many a time, as we remember and treat others in a similar and attentive way. He taught us in Survey School and in Civil Engineering in U1 Architecture, McGill, 1974-75. Five years later, 1980, I seek his advice for a ski sled and am surprised that he remembers me. 'Some people you don't forget', he said. We never did, either. Thank you, Professor Selby. Safe journey home.
