DONALD POUNDER Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen on May 11, 2013.
POUNDER, Donald Williamson
May 1, 2013. It is with deep regret that we announce the death of Donald Pounder (1925 - 2013). Donald was predeceased by his parents, Irvine and Susie Pounder, his brothers John and James, and his sister-in- law Margaret. He is survived by his sister-in- law Veronica, his nieces Kathryn, Janet, Amanda, and Carolyn, and his nephews Michael, David, and Geoffrey. He will be missed by his many friends in Ottawa and beyond. Donald's father was a distinguished professor of mathematics at the University of Toronto and later York University, and Donald followed in his footsteps. After graduating from the University of Toronto, he completed a Masters degree in mathematics at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Donald applied his academic training to a varied career at Avro Canada, IBM, and Systems Dimensions, among others. Donald's many interests included gliding and early music. He was an active member of Canadian Amateur Musicians/Musiciens Amateurs du Canada, and was a master player of the recorder. In later years, he keenly pursued genealogical research. He was also a founding member of a small University of Toronto luncheon club. A service in memory of Donald will be held at the Westboro Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 403 Richmond Road, Ottawa on Tuesday, May 21st at 3:30 pm preceded by a visitation at 2:30, and followed by an afternoon tea. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Condolences, tributes or donations may be made at www.tubmanfuneralhomes.com

Uncle Irvin was my grandmother's cousin. My mother was therefore a second cousin of Donald. Uncle Irvin tutored me in mathematics. How fortunate I was. My mother spoke often of Donald and family. Please accept our deepest sympathy

I remember Don as a dogged researcher when he came to our Lanark County Genealogical Society meetings seeking his ancestors from our area .He was very generous in sharing his "finds".

I had the pleasure of working with Don in the Datacrown era. Our offices were next to each other. Don would often stand in my doorway, stare off into space and just shake his head at the events of our day. He was a man that vendors did not want in our meetings because of his intellect and background. I am glad to have known and worked with him. Rest well my friend.

I worked with Don at SDL and knew him personally in more recent years. He was fortunate enough to have lived in the same home in Westboro between 1978 and the summer of 2012. He was a remarkable man and will be missed by all his SDL and other friends. Rest in peace, Don. You will be missed.

Don and I worked together in the late 70s and early 80s at SDL and Datacrown. Don was very intelligent and always interesting to talk to about his work on the Avro Arrow and his days at IBM. I remember many intense discussions about DASD configurations with Don and Dave Falzon, who also recently passed away. I'm sure we all miss the "old days" and the company of people like Don. I expect that Don and Dave will continue planning disk configurations wherever they are. I'm sure Don will rest in peace.

Don was part of our happy little recorder group in the 70s. Now you can make music in heaven, Don.

I knew Don as an avid family historian and genealogist ... he was inquisitive and determined and we shared many conversations on resources and research challenges. Don was always a gentleman and scholar, he will be missed by his many friends in the British Isles Family History Society of Greater Ottawa.

Don was a fellow member of the British Isles Family History Society, always willing to share ideas and point to useful resources. His presence has been missed during his recent illness. May he rest in peace.

Don was my next door neighbour when I first moved to Ottawa and he remained a good friend over the years even after I moved several blocks away. He was always ready for a conversation about his search for his family roots and his music. In the last number of years we had lots of chats about our neighbourhood and in recent months about his health saga. he was a kind, generous and very interesting person.
