H. Cross Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 8 to Dec. 9, 2008.
CROSS, H. Morrey 1921 - 2008 Peacefully at home in Ottawa, on Sunday December 7, at age 87. Son of the late Harold and Anne Cross. Fond husband of Shirley (nee Jakeman), beloved father of Julie, Deb (John) and David (Marlene), and doting grandfather of Julia, Stephanie and Michael. Survived by his sister Marjorie (Richard), brother Malcolm (Pauline), and sister-in-law Ann. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Morrey graduated as a Chemical Engineer from McGill University in 1943, and immediately began his Canadian Army service. Upon discharge in 1946, he launched his career with Canadian International Paper Company (CIP), and in 1955 began his decades-long career with JWI Ltd. where he held various management and executive positions, in Montreal, England and Kanata, until his retirement at age 70. At age 12, he had begun a lifelong commitment to the scouting movement. Throughout his career he volunteered at all levels in the movement, from local troop leader, to International Commissioner for Scouts Canada, and representative at the World Scout Committee. During this time he was the recipient of numerous national and international awards for his service. His leadership and dedication to community service extended well beyond the Scouts, including serving with the Unitarian Service Committee of Canada (USC), and the Board of Bishop Hamilton School. His faith was an important element in his life, and he was always fully involved in his church community. For the past 30 years he was an active member of All Saints' Anglican Church, Westboro. He served the church in many capacities, in particular as Treasurer for over 20 years, retiring from that role at age 87. He also held a number of volunteer and elected positions with the Diocese over many years. Visitation will take place at Tubman Funeral Home, Westboro Chapel, 403 Richmond Rd (at Roosevelt Ave) on Wednesday December 10, from 2:00 - 4:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.. Service will be on Thursday, December 11, at 11:00 a.m. at All Saints' Anglican Church, Westboro. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to All Saints' Anglican Church, Westboro, 347 Richmond Road, Ottawa, Ontario K2A 0E7. Morrey was a valued USC Canada supporter for many, many years. He also gave USC many long hours as a volunteer, as a Board member, and as Treasurer. His quiet leadership and positive approach were greatly appreciated by those who knew him. Our sincere condolences to Shirley and the rest of Morrey’s family.

Dear Shirley and Family
We will always remember Morrey as a great organizer. When the Jakeman's and Murley's could not get the job done the Cross's sure could.
