Arthur NIELSEN Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen from Jan. 11 to Jan. 13, 2014.
NIELSEN , A.K. "Arthur"
BSc., MEd., MSc.
Art died on January 10, 2014 after a very courageous battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. He leaves behind his wife Dorothy and his three children Terry, Ted and Anna- Marie (Paul), his 7 grandchildren Chris, Dan (Charmaine), Tyler, Zachary, Ryan, Jake, Emily and his great-granddaughter Olivia. Survived by his brother Ken (Carol), an uncle to their three sons as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins both in Canada and Denmark. Art taught elementary school, secondary school and lectured at the post graduate level at the State University of New York in Potsdam, NY. He served as principal of a number of schools in the Ottawa area. Art founded and built the Ottawa Canadians Baseball and Hockey organizations. He was the Past-President of both the Central Canada Hockey League and the Ottawa Sooners Football Club. Through his National Capital Amateur Athletic Association (NCAAA), Art sponsored hundreds of less fortunate youngsters, many from the Boys and Girls Club and several area minor hockey associations, to attend his hockey and sports camp. Notwithstanding his successes as a builder, owner and coach in the sporting community, Art took great pride in his work with the Ottawa Young Canadians and their contributions to CHEO. Special thanks to Dr. Sabloff, Melissa and the care staff from the Hematology Research clinic at the Ottawa General Hospital. Also special thanks to Dr. Raymond and the many caring staff of 5D at St Vincent Hospital. Friends are invited to visit the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry 315 McLeod Street on Tuesday January 14th, 2014 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Memorial service will be held in the Chapel on Wednesday January 15th, 2014 at 1 p.m. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to Leukemia Society of Canada or CHEO would be appreciated.

Dear Dorothy, Anna Marie, Terry, Ted and Families, I learned of Art's passing on the day of his funeral. Had I known of this sad occasion I would have been with you all celebrating Art's life. Instead, I travelled through Memory Lane and realized how much Art took part in my life and that of my family I loved teaching and have Art to thank for hiring me and bringing me to teach at Viscount for 17 happy years. Much of our family entertainment in the early 70s involved following the Canadians (sp)
around to cheer them on ice and the baseball diamond. Happy days and a wonderful group of people to know. Fred and I send our love and prayers. Thank you for sharing your husband (dad) with us. His results as an educator and coach will be the tribute we wish to pay him. Sincerely, Shirley Pinnock

Mrs. Nielsen and family - Please accept my condolences on the passing of 'Mr. Nielsen'. As Fred as said, he was a tremendous influence on the lives of many young athletes and I am grateful to have been one of those beneficiaries. His legacy lives on with those of us who have tried to follow in his footsteps. May I also extend a thank you to each of you for sharing your Dad/husband with all those loud and hungry teenagers that you accepted into your home and your lives.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Art's passing. As one of the original Ottawa Canadians (1968), I regard 'Mr Nielsen' as one of the most influential and positive mentors of my youth. He was certainly the finest coach I've ever had in both hockey and baseball but, more than that, he was just a fine person. Art's abilities as an educator were by no means confined to the classroom. I learned a lot during our chats to and from rinks and ball diamonds over those formative years, and I'm filled with gratitude for his impact upon my life.

Dear Art:
I wanted your family to know how deeply thankful I am for the opportunity to work with you on many of our CHEO fundraisers. You are my mentor and friend. You touched the lives of all the children who participated in the Young Canadians programs. I only hope you enjoyed yourself as much as I did.

Rest well my dear dear friend.

Art will be missed dearly. I attribute much of my success in adulthood to the guidance Art provided to me when I was young. He was great teacher, coach, boss and friend to me.

Dorothy and family ... I have so many memories of Art's and your involvement in the former "CJHL" -- Art was tireless and I often sought his counsel as he brought a unique perspective to every situation. Such a loss for all of us but especially for you. God bless you all and may he rest in peace now after a lengthy struggle.

The Nielson Family,

Please know that we are thinking of you as you work your way through this sad period. As it happens we spent a few hours in Solvang, California today - a community with a proud Danish history working hard to keep their culture alive.

Best regards,

My deepest sympathy to your family. The world has lost a dear man, teacher and mentor. This fine gentleman taught me in Grade 8 and saw potential in me more than I saw in myself. He believed in what he did and made sure we all believed in ourselves. There was never a dull moment in his class or the school he taught at. I think of Mr. Nielsen often and tell my children of what a wonder teacher I had in Grade 8 at Blossom Park Public School. Even though I moved away, his words and wisdom echo in my mind and my heart.

Dear Dorothy and family,
I was sad to hear of the loss of Art. He was such a great friend to my late father, Joe. He remained loyal to my father throughout his Alzeimers. Every time I visited my father, the phone would ring at about 9am and it was Art calling Dad to debate and joke about hockey. Art contributed greatly to my father's quality of life and I am forever grateful for that. I hope they are together now joking around and having a few laughs.
